Press Conference: Senate Majority Press Conference

The Senate is holding a news conference on Brittany's Law (S3645B). The bill, if passed, would establish a statewide violent felony offender registry, requiring offenders to register with the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services upon release or parole from prison or other facility. Brittany's Law is named for 12 year-old Brittany Passalacqua who, along with her mother Helen Buchel, was murdered in Geneva, NY in 2009 by a convicted felon who had been released early from prison. The registry would be similar to the New York State Sex Offender Registry.

IDC, Assemb. Ortiz, Join 10-year-old Heart Transplant Survivor to Push for Life-Saving Legislation 'Lauren's Law' to Increase Organ Donation Passed Important Committee Vote Today

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Independent Democratic Conference and Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, (D-Brooklyn) joined 10-year-old heart transplant survivor Lauren Shields and her family today in a push for life saving legislation.

The measure, “Lauren's Law,” would prohibit a driver's license application from being processed unless the organ donation section is filled out. Applicants would have to check a box stating “yes,” or “not at this time.” There currently is an organ donation section on the application, but it is not required to be filled out.

This change would increase organ donation in New York, which is ranked last in the country for the number of new donors.

Griffo Says Budget Agreement is Fiscally Responsible

State Budget Addresses NY’s Top Priority

Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C-IP, Rome) said the budget compromise unveiled in Albany fulfils a promise made to the people of the 47th District and all of New York to make fiscal responsibility the top issue in Albany.

“No one enjoys passing a budget that makes painful cuts, but this was a hard dose of fiscal reality that was necessary,” Griffo said. “For agencies looking for money, this will not be a good budget. For taxpayers wondering if the state has heard their voices, it’s an encouraging sign.”
