Griffo, Schimminger Bills Would Reform Lieutenant Governor Post

ALBANY – The lieutenant governor position has drawn increased attention and scrutiny in the past month in light of an upcoming change in personnel in November.

State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo and Assemblyman Robin Schimminger believe this is a perfect time for the Legislature to reconsider how the lieutenant governor is chosen and his or her role in the governing of New York. They sponsor three bills that would institute some common-sense reforms:

Press Conference: JOINT TASK FORCE ON HEROIN AND OPIOID ADDICTION TO RELEASE REPORT AND LEGISLATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS

After conducting 18 public forums across the state, listening to 53 hours of testimony and speaking with more than 2,000 residents about the tragedy of the state’s heroin and opioid epidemic, the Senate’s bipartisan Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction will release its report tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 1:15 p.m. in Room 124 of the Capitol.

Twenty-five Senators who participated in the Task Force will be joined at the news conference by experts on substance abuse, and representatives of law enforcement, to make legislative recommendations to address issues surrounding the increase in drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York that has claimed countless lives and hurt families across the state.

At Start of Summer and Beginning of “100 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers,” Klein, Crespo Push for Passage of Legislation Curbing Underage Drinking

BRONX, NY -  The upcoming Memorial Day weekend, marks the unofficial start of summer – but it also marks the beginning of what is known as the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen drivers. Underage drinking continues to be a chronic problem in New York City with nearly 1,800 summonses a year issued by the NYPD for sales of alcohol to minors.

Lawmakers seek first-in-the-nation set-aside program to enable service-disabled 

veterans to participate in annual state legislative internship program

In advance of Memorial Day, New York State Senator Bill Larkin (R,C-Cornwall-on-Hudson), a World War II and Korean War combat veteran, and Assemblyman Jim Tedisco (R,C,I-Glenville) today introduced new legislation to create the G.I.V.E. Back NY program (Giving Internships for disabled Veterans not fully Employed) to enable disabled veterans to participate in the Assembly and Senate’s annual legislative internship program.

City Speed Limit Legislation Gains Momentum After Families, Advocates and City Officials Unite

Senator Dilan has amended his initial proposal to allow the City of New York to establish speed limits as low as 20 mph, after the families of those lost to reckless driving, advocates and city officials agreed to stand behind a 25 mph proposal. A resolution in the City Council sponsored by Council Member David Greenfield, affirming city-wide support of the agreed upon 25 mph legislation and urging the State Legislature to act on the measure, was approved overwhelmingly.

Senator Dilan Joins NYC DOT, NYPD to Announce Arterial Slow Zone on McGuiness Blvd

Senator Dilan joined state representatives, city officials and advocates at the intersection of McGuinness Boulevard and Nassau Avenue to welcome the latest of 25 planned arterial slow zones throughout the city. McGuinness Boulevard joins Atlantic Avenue and the Grand Concourse as a 25 mph arterial slow zone, with signal re-timings and new signage to be added in the coming weeks.

Senator Dilan Announces Passage of 2014 – 2015 State Budget

$138 billion spending plan funds citywide Pre-K, increases to TAP and higher-ed opportunity programs.Senator Martin Malavé Dilan (D-Bushwick) announced the passage of  a $138 billion budget that includes $300 million for universal Pre Kindergarten programs in New York City, new government reforms and increased funding to social programs.“This year’s budget has made great strides to meet new, and greater demands while continuing to offset the gaps left by previous year’s cuts. I commend Governor Cuomo and my Senate Colleagues for delivering a responsible spending plan that spends smart, invests in our students, and offers some much-needed relief for our working families,” said Senator Dilan.
