Senator Seward Announces Williams Syndrome Awareness Week

COOPERSTOWN, 05/09/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that the state senate recently approved a special legislative resolution he sponsored calling on the governor to proclaim May 8 – 14 as Williams Syndrome Awareness Week in the State of New York. 

“Williams syndrome is a relatively unknown genetic disorder, yet it affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide,” said Senator Seward.  “Generating public awareness about Williams syndrome is an important step in supporting patients who suffer from the disorder, along with their families, improving care and advancing future research.”

Senator Rivera Recognizes Autism Awareness Month, Announces Support for Autism Insurance Legislation

Bronx, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) recognized Autism Awareness Month and announced his support for legislation that would provide screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, help to end discriminatory practices impacting New Yorkers. Since being elected, Senator Rivera has visited with organizations that provide critical services for children and families impacted by autism in the Bronx, including Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC), the Bronx Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Council and Unique People Services.

State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, has introduced legislation to ensure that people with autism receive insurance coverage for the screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders.

Currently, those with autism are routinely denied insurance benefits for the treatment of their disorder, forcing their families to pay for costly treatments.

McDonald Hosts Press Conference on Reported Group Home Abuse

Chairman of the Senate Mental Health Committee, Senator Roy McDonald was joined by Chairman of the Assembly Mental Health Committee Felix Ortiz, along with Senator Kemp Hannon, Assemblyman Tom Abinanti, Assemblyman Mark Schroeder, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee.
