Healthcare Update Newsletter: Effects of Healthcare Reform Legislation

I know how confusing healthcare insurance issues can be, and in times like these, with new Federal legislation, these issues can get even more complicated. My office has received a great many calls from constituents seeking assistance in navigating issues of access to healthcare and in dealing with Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. As New York State moves toward implementing Federal healthcare reform, there are many new questions about what changes to expect. This newsletter is an effort to address some of these questions.

Senator Johnson’s Protections for the Disabled Signed into Law

Strong legislation sponsored by Senator Craig M. Johnson, (D-Nassau), that will protect disabled New York state residents from discrimination was signed into law last week.

“This state has a rich history of defending the civil rights of its residents,” Senator Johnson said. “I am proud to have helped enact a law that follows this tradition and ensures that we protect those who may not be able to protect themselves.”

New York Legislature Passes Landmark Bill Extending Healthcare Coverage for Autistic Patients

 

Oppenheimer co-sponsored bill now awaits Governor’s approval

The New York State Legislature passed legislation protecting families and children affected by autism spectrum disorders from exorbitant healthcare costs.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) was a key co-sponsor of the legislation (S7000B), which passed the Senate on June 9th, with unanimous, bipartisan support.  Earlier this week, the Assembly passed the bill, which will now be sent to the Governor for his approval.

Kendra’s Law Passes Senate

Majority Extends Mental Health & Public Protection Program Through 2015

The Senate Democratic Majority announced the passage of legislation (S7254) to keep Kendra’s law, an important mental health and public protection program fully operational through 2015.

The law had been set to expire at the end of this month.

FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES FINAL LEGISLATIVE APPROVAL OF LEGISLATION ASSISTING PEOPLE WITH LYMPHEDEMA

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced that the State Senate has approved legislation he sponsors that will make information about lymphatic diseases more readily available to New Yorkers suffering from these diseases. The State Assembly has also passed the bill which now goes to Governor Paterson for consideration. Senator Fuschillo, said, “A diagnosis of lymphedema can be frightening and confusing. Many people are unfamiliar with the symptoms and recommended treatments.
