Department of Financial Services to Speek Resolution of Insurance Claims in Areas Affected by SANDY

The NYS Department of Financial Services (DFS) is setting new rules to speed the processing of insurance claims in areas affected by Storm Sandy. The new regulation reduces the amount of time an insurer can delay its decision on a claim, and requires insurers to report to the Department on how many claims it is delaying and the reasons for the delays.

Broad Coalition of Brooklyn Elected Officials Urge Long-Term Plan to Keep All Campuses Open

BROOKLYN – Today, a broad coalition of Brooklyn elected officials joined 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), nurses and caregivers, and community members to rally in support of SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Long Island College Hospital (LICH), and the hospital’s other affiliates – which are vital to Brooklyn’s already-underserved residents.

Last week, an audit released by the New York State Comptroller’s office made clear that there is a fiscal crisis at SUNY Downstate and its affiliated institutions. The elected officials are arguing that the potential closure of any campus is unacceptable, and that SUNY must develop a stabilization plan that provides a long-term solution to preserve critical diversity in medical education, quality healthcare, and good jobs for Brooklyn and the entire state.

Governor Cuomo Outlines 2013-2014 Executive Budget to Maintain Fiscal Responsibility and Continue to Invest in Economic Growth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo unveiled the proposed 2013-14Executive Budget and Management Plan that builds on two years of balanced, fiscally responsible budgeting and invests in economic development, education reform, rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy, provides support to local governments and school districts, and includes no new taxes or fees.

Highlights of the Executive Budget:

· Eliminates $1.3 billion budget gap with no new taxes or fees. The expected gap for 2013-14 was projected to be $17.4 billion prior to the last two responsible budgets.

· Holds spending increases below 2 percent for third consecutive year.

GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNS BILL INTO LAW REQUIRING LICENSE FOR PERSONNEL WHO OPERATE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT THAT SUPPORTS HEART AND LUNGS

Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced that Governor Cuomo has signed his bill (S4640c) into law requiring a New York state permit for medical personnel, who operate equipment that supports a patient’s heart and lungs during certain medical procedures. 

“Currently, perfusionists, who are the operators of the equipment, are not required to be licensed or certified in New York state. This law requires that perfusionists obtain a permit and establish that they are regulated by the New York State Board of Education,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

Electeds Urge Comprehensive Plan to Save Hospital and Medical School

BROOKLYN – Today, a coalition of Brooklyn elected officials sent a letter to Governor Cuomo urging immediate action to save critical services and medical training at the State University of New York’s Downstate Medical Center (Downstate) and its affiliates.

Downstate faces a major operating deficit, and a significant restructuring is necessary for the institution’s survival. Downstate’s Long Island College Hospital has already laid off 150 employees; over 400 more Downstate employees will receive contract-mandated notice of future layoffs this month, with over a thousand layoffs expected in the next year. This will lead to a massive cut in services and the ability to train medical professionals in Brooklyn.

Unity Hospital Opens New Cafe

Unity Hospital opened its new bistro style Café.

The new Café has doubled in size - from 4,472 square feet to over 9,000 square feet  - to match the expanding size of the new Hospital that will be complete in 2014. The Café serves approximately 1,100 meals per day, servicing nearly 2,600 Unity employees on the Hospital campus.   

 

This new bistro-style Café was created for the comfort and enjoyment of employees as visitors who need a comfortable space while waiting or in the course of visiting friends and loved ones.
