McDonald Hosts Press Conference on Reported Group Home Abuse

Chairman of the Senate Mental Health Committee, Senator Roy McDonald was joined by Chairman of the Assembly Mental Health Committee Felix Ortiz, along with Senator Kemp Hannon, Assemblyman Tom Abinanti, Assemblyman Mark Schroeder, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee. The legislators discussed a recent NY Times investigative report that outlined allegations of abuse at OPWDD group homes.

3/9/2011: Mental Health Matters Advocacy Day

Speakers included Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Chair on Mental Hygiene, Senator Roy McDonald, Chair of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Senator Shirley L. Huntley, Ranking Member on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Assemblyman, Jeffrey Dinowitz Chair of Aging and Mental Health Commissioner Michael Hogan. Also, we will hear from other leading experts discussing significant mental health issues.

We will also have the wonderful mix of MHA members dedicated to community based mental health services, our grassroots colleagues from AFSP, our colleagues in the community as well as several high school students whose schools have been directly impacted by suicide completion.

Senator Oppenheimer Hosts Caregiver Support Seminar at White Plains High School

On October 13, 2010, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) sponsored a free caregiver seminar in the Atrium of White Plains High School. The event featured experts from the Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) who offered tips and techniques for taking care of loved ones and preventing caregiver burnout.

White Plains School Superintendent Christopher Clouet welcomed the audience and introduced the Senator, saying “Senator Oppenheimer has the vision to bring community members together to discuss and strategize on the delicate issues facing caregivers. The school district is delighted to host this important event.”

Healthcare Update Newsletter: Effects of Healthcare Reform Legislation

New York Legislature Passes Landmark Bill Extending Healthcare Coverage for Autistic Patients

 

Oppenheimer co-sponsored bill now awaits Governor’s approval

The New York State Legislature passed legislation protecting families and children affected by autism spectrum disorders from exorbitant healthcare costs.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) was a key co-sponsor of the legislation (S7000B), which passed the Senate on June 9th, with unanimous, bipartisan support.  Earlier this week, the Assembly passed the bill, which will now be sent to the Governor for his approval.

Kendra’s Law Passes Senate

The Senate Democratic Majority announced the passage of legislation (S7254) to keep Kendra’s law, an important mental health and public protection program fully operational through 2015.

The law had been set to expire at the end of this month.
