McDonald Applauds Passage of Legislation to Protect People with Special Needs

Albany – Senator Roy McDonald thanked his colleagues in the legislature for passing legislation to protect people with special needs and disabilities through the creation of a justice center to prevent, investigate and prosecute abuse and neglect of individuals placed in state care. The bill, sponsored by McDonald in the Senate (S.7749), passed both houses of the legislature and awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

(Albany) - State Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-C-IP, Rome) said today that the Senate passed sweeping legislation that will transform how New Yorkers with special needs and disabilities are protected. The bill (S7749) is part of a three-way agreement between the Senate, Assembly and Governor Cuomo to establish the strongest standards and practices in the nation for protecting individuals in state operated, certified or licensed facilities and programs.

Governor Cuomo & Legislative Leaders Announce Agreement on Legislation to Protect People with Special Needs

The Governor and legislative leaders reached agreement on legislation that will establish the strongest standards and practices in the nation for protecting people with special needs and disabilities.

The legislation creates a new Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs, an initiative that will transform how the state protects over one million New Yorkers in State operated, certified or licensed facilities and programs.

On June 5, 2012, Senator Shirley L. Huntley along with members of the Senate Democratic Conference addressed and discussed a myriad of topics related to Women’s Health in a public forum format. Senator Huntley’s Military Sexual Trauma bill (S. 6342-C) was discussed by special guest speaker Ardeane Greene-Cook, a retired veteran, survivor of MST, and advocate of female soldiers and veterans.

Senate Approves Measure to Improve Oversight of Facilities Serving People with Special Needs

State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) voted in favor of Senate bill 7400, which creates a new state investigative and oversight agency known as the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. The Center would be responsible for ensuring that individuals served by residential facilities and day programs operated, licensed, or certified by six state agencies are protected from abuse or neglect.

Senator Carlucci and Assemblywoman Gunther Join Fight to Protect People with Developmental Disabilities

Sponsor Paula’s Law in Assembly and Senate

ALBANY, NY – Assemblywoman Aileen M. Gunther (D, C – Forestburgh) and Senator David Carlucci (D – Rockland/Orange) today announced their sponsorship of legislation (S4817/A7128) requiring the installation and operation of surveillance cameras at all entrances and exits of facilities operated by the New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), including group homes, residential homes and inpatient facilities. It would also require the commissioner of OPWDD, in consultation with the State Police, to develop a system for maintaining such recorded images.
