SENATOR PARKER HOSTS ANNUAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIVEAWAY FOR 600 SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

Brooklyn, NY – For the seventh consecutive year, State Senator Kevin Parker and Sesame Flyers International, Inc., hosted Harvest Fest – an end-of-summer /  back-to-school celebration for Brooklyn families at Paerdegat Park on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Over 500 families came out for the event which included face painting, games, fitness and nutrition resources and CPR instruction to children and their parents.

Westchester Food Bank Goes Orange For Hunger Awareness (Source: Daily Voice)

The holiday season is usually the biggest donation time for food banks, but Food Bank For Westchester (FBW) hopes to inspire others to remember the hungry every time of year.

In observance of September as Feeding America's Hunger Action Month, the FBW announced Thursday its "Go Orange To End Hunger," campaign – a month-long campaign to raise awareness of Westchester's hungry residents.

Food Bank for Westchester September's Hunger Action Month

Senator Stewart-Cousins wore orange on Thursday, September 4th, to help the Food Bank For Westchester raise awareness during September's Hunger Action Month. Volunteers joined in at the Elmsford warehouse, raising their arms in the fight to end hunger. They estimate 200,000 people in Westchester are hungry or food-challenged, 66,000 of them are children and 44,000 are seniors. #GoOrangetoEndHunger

Moms Rally at City Hall in Support of Breastfeeding, Celebrate 20th Anniversary of NYS Civil Rights Law Allowing Women to Breastfeed Anywhere They Have the Legal Right to Be

Today on the steps of City Hall, breastfeeding mothers and families, lactation professionals and advocates from all over New York City participated in the NYC Breastfeeding Leadership Council Annual Breastfeeding Subway Caravan, joined by Deputy Mayor Lilliam Barrios-Paoli and multiple elected leaders, inlcuding Sen. Krueger. After the rally, the caravan traveled on the “A” train to Bedford-Stuyvesant’s Restoration Plaza for the Brooklyn Alliance for Breastfeeding Empowerment’s (B.A.B.E.) day-long breastfeeding celebration.

Legislative Notebook: State Initiatives of Interest to Veterans

Here is a partial listing of bills I have supported this session to aid New York’s former servicemen and servicewomen. These initiatives will now go to Governor Cuomo for final action.

-- Legislation I co-sponsored was passed by both houses (S.7839, first introduced as S.4714)) to extend the Military Service Credit Law of 2000 to all veterans who have served in the military. Right now, public employees who served in the armed forces may purchase up to three years of pension credit only if their military service occurred during specified conflicts. This measure will expand this opportunity to public employee veterans who also served their country in peacetime.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO PREVENT WELFARE CARDS FROM BUYING TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND BEING USED AT LIQUOR STORES, CASINOS AND STRIP CLUBS

The New York Senate today passed the “Public Assistance Integrity Act,” sponsored by Senator Tom Libous, which would prohibit welfare benefits from being used to purchase alcohol and tobacco, or to be used at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs in New York.

“Public Assistance should not be spent at liquor stores, casinos or strip clubs, but under New York State Law, it’s legal. We need to stop this abuse,” said Libous. “Every welfare dollar spent at the liquor store is money that could be going to help families get back on their feet.”

Senator Valesky Presents Check to CNY Food Bank

On November 27, Senator David J. Valesky presented Lynn Hy and Liz Occhino from the Central New York Food Bank with a check for $2,486.65. Included in the donation was a portion of the proceeds from the electronics recycling event held in September in partnership with Sunnking Electronics Recycling and Time Warner Cable. Along with him are Alice Kim, northeast government relations director for Time Warner Cable, and Steve Porubek from Time Warner Cable.

Brooklyn, NY- With devastating cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) affecting families only a week before Thanksgiving, Senator Kevin Parker distributed almost one hundred-plus free turkeys at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Dozens of local community-based organizations, faith-based institutions and non-profit charities who are helping feed the hungry received their turkeys from the Senator so they might prepare traditional dinners to those less fortunate in their respective constituencies.
