No-cost Mammograms Available

Early detection of breast cancer can save lives!

Mobile Mammography Van will be at the Office of NYS Senator Eric Adams (572 Flatbush Avenue) on Thursday, August 25, 2011. 

Medical services will be provided for women age 40+ who have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months.

For women with health insurance, the insurance will be billed for services.  However, women will not be charged a co-pay and will not receive a bill. 

For women without health insurance, services will be paid for by the Screening Partnerships of the NYS Cancer Services Program or through geneorus contributions by the American-Italian Cancer Foundation's donors.

SENATOR MONTGOMERY HONORS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT DOROTHY BURNHAM, A BROOKLYN “RENAISSANCE WOMAN”

The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO TO SPONSOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM IN MERRICK

New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick), in conjunction with NuHealth/Nassau Health Care Corporation, will be sponsoring a breast cancer screening program on Thursday, August 18th from 8:45 am to 12:00 pm at the Merrick Library. The library is located at 2279 Merrick Avenue in Merrick.            Appointments are necessary and will be scheduled on first-come, first-served basis. On site nurses and technicians will provide a mammography, a clinical breast examination and instructions for self examination.

NYS Senate Gives Final Legislative Approval to Montgomery Bill Authorizing Nurse Practitioners to Sign Death Certificates

The State Senate gave final legislative approval today  to a bill permitting New York's more than 13,000 nurse practitioners to sign death certificates in the same manner as physicians and other authorized parties. The bill (S.325) is sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn), who is a member of the Senate Health Committee.

Bill To Establish Naturopathic Doctors As Licensed Professionals In New York State Passes Senate.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R, C, I- Port Jefferson) said today that a bill he sponsored to establish naturopathic doctors as licensed professionals in New York State has passed the Senate. This legislation also includes specific requirements for the education and residency training for naturopaths, the creation of a state board for naturopathy, and continuing education provisions.

Senator Owen H. Johnson sponsored legislation that helps over 98,000 charities and non-profits in New York continue to provide desperately needed social work services to those in need.  The bill (S.5713), passed by the NY Senate on June 17, 2011, grants a nine month extension for charitable organizations to apply for a New York State Education Department waiver that will allow them to continue to lawfully employ licensed social workers and other mental health professionals.

Breast Cancer Help, Inc. held its 16th Annual Gala and Casino Night at the Sheraton Long Island in Hauppauge.  The evening included dinner, musical entertainment, raffles, and casino games including blackjack, roulette, craps and a money wheel.  All proceeds benefited Breast Cancer Help, Inc., its Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center, and research for the causes and cure of breast cancer.“I was pleased to be selected as this year’s honoree for the 16th Annual Gala and Casino Night,” Senator Johnson said.  “ I applaud the tireless mission of Breast Cancer Help, Inc. in providing programs and services for early detection and treatment of breast cancer.”

Highbridge Residents Get Free Mammograms

State Senator José M. Serrano, Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson and the Project Renewal Scan Van Program today offered free Mammogram Screenings for eligible women in the Highbridge section of the Bronx.“All women can take an active part in the early detection of breast cancer by having regular visits to the doctor, self breast exams and periodic mammograms,” said Senator Serrano. “However, for uninsured women, getting a mammogram can be costly and inconvenient. That’s why we’re bringing the Scan Van to local residents throughout the 28th District in the next few weeks.”
