Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Stands with Women's Advocacy Groups to Urge Governor Paterson to Enact New Protections for Domestic Violence Survivors

Leading women’s advocacy groups join Senator Suzi Oppenheimer in support of legislation to protect domestic violence survivors.

While violent crime overall has declined in recent years, violence against loved ones is on the rise.  In 2008, intimate partner homicides increased 25% statewide and 45% in counties outside New York City.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), joined by representatives from the Pace Women’s Justice Center, My Sisters’ Place, Hope’s Door and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, today called on Governor Paterson to sign into law sweeping legislation to strengthen the rights and protections of domestic violence survivors and increase the criminal penalties for domestic abuse.

Standing Up for Women's Reproductive Rights

Recently, I sent an open letter to President Obama expressing my concern over abortion restrictions to the high-risk insurance pools established through the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act.

When the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (PPAHC) was passed, I felt that we, as a nation, were establishing the beginning of a caring, and needed, response to a serious abuse inherent to the health insurance delivery system. But, the recent announcement applicable to this Act by the Obama administration, prohibiting abortions excepting cases of rape, incest and life endangerment to the mother, carves out a legal medical procedure that has serious implications for a population that is already medically compromised.

NYS Senator Eric Adams Joins His Majority Conference Colleagues to Pass the Midwifery Modernization Act

 

NYS Senator Eric Adams announces passage in the NYS Senate and the NYS Assembly of the Midwifery Modernization Act. The legislation will eliminate the requirement for a written practice agreement (WPA) for licensed midwives to practice in New York State.

State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) is announcing his plans to host free mammography screenings in conjunction with the American Italian Cancer Foundation in Septmeber and October at both of his district offices.

The 37 foot mobile mammography van, staffed completely by women, will be outside of Senator Golden’s District Office located on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at his District Office located at 7408-5th Avenue and on Friday, October 1, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 3604 Quentin Road.

The mammography screenings are free of charge and take about thirty minutes to complete. An appointment, which is necessary, can be made by calling 1-800-453-8378 ext. 1.

In late 2009 I sponsored and pushed through Legislation (S1107) to establish a Breastfeeding Mothers’ Bill of Rights. All too often women are made to feel ashamed when they breastfeed, which can lead them to quit breastfeeding their babies prematurely.

My Breastfeeding Mother’s Bill of Rights is common-sense legislation that empowers and supports new mothers by providing them with the information they need prior to, and after they give birth so they can make the best decisions for their child and themselves.

Padavan Hosts No-Cost Mammography Screenings In Bellerose

On Saturday June 5, New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) and the American-Italian Cancer Foundation hosted a mammography screening event outside of Padavan’s District Office in Bellerose. The no-cost screenings took place on the Foundation’s fully contained mobile mammography van. Both insured and un-insured women who took part in the event incurred no-out-of-pocket expenses and no co-pays. The event was the second in a series throughout 2010. Padavan hosted an event back in April and will host another one in November.
