Greek-American Politicians Applaud St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Rebuilding Deal

The New York Daily News wrote about Greek American politicians' efforts to rebuild lower Mahattan's St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was demolished in the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks. Senator Gianaris is taking part in these efforts to provide a place of religious freedom for Greek Americans and New Yorkers alike.

Gov. Cuomo today announced that he, Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward, representatives of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese and St. Nicholas Parish and State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, "signed the agreement that permits the rebuilding of the Church with a nondenominational bereavement center at the east end of Liberty Park, at 130 Liberty Street."

Renovated LIC dog run opening soon

The Queens Chronicle wrote about the improved Long Island City dog run on Vernon Boulevard, which Senator Gianaris along with Queens West Development Corp., the state Parks Department and DOG LIC implemented.

State Sen. Mike Gianaris and Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer announced on Tuesday that the long-awaited renovations to the Vernon Boulevard dog run in Long Island City have begun.

The elected officials, along with Queens West Development Corp., the state Parks Department and DOG LIC, a local advocacy group, have worked together since last year to make major improvements to the site.

“I look forward to seeing western Queens residents and their pets taking advantage of all this new dog run will offer,” said Gianaris (D-Astoria).

Annex The Mills at High Falls Ribbon Cutting

On Monday, September 19th, Senator Robach spoke at, and took part in, a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Annex The Mills at High Falls. Construction on the project started in April 2010, and was completed in July. The total cost of the project was $7.5 million. The buildings, located on State Street in downtown Rochester are anticipated to be fully occupied by the end of this year. Press Conference: Gianaris, Nolan and Van Bramer to Hold Press Conference Announcing Construction on Vernon Blvd Dog Run

Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Cathy Nolan and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer will hold a press conference announcing the start of construction on the Vernon Boulevard dog run on Tuesday, September 20 at 2 pm. The elected officials have been working with Queens West Development Corporation, New York State Department of Parks and DOG LIC, a local advocacy group, to renovate and greatly enhance the dog run. The press conference will be held across the street from the dog run, on the west side of Vernon Boulevard at 48th Avenue.

Mildred Johnson Estates Phase II Ribbon Cutting

On Friday, September 9th, Senator Robach had the opportunity to attend, and speak at, the Mildred Johnson Estates Phase II ribbon cutting ceremony. The event celebrated the new construction of 21 3-bedroom, single family homes on formerly vacant lots owned by the City of Rochester. Phase II is modeled on the success of Mildred Johnson Estates Phase I, which included 23 single family homes and was completed in 2008. All of the 21 new homes will be affordable to families earning 50% or less of the area median income. Together, Phase I and Phase II represent a 10 million dollar investment in the neighborhood.

GIANARIS LAUDS FILM/TV PROGRAM JOBS

Queens Gazette wrote about the thousands of jobs the film industry, aided by the film tax credit which was championed  by Senator Gianaris, has brought to New York. 

State Senator Michael Gianaris (D–Astoria) had high praise and satisfaction for a program he supported which has created many jobs in his district and elsewhere in New York state.

Gianaris pointed out that the New York State Film Production Credit, which rewards companies that produce films and TV shows in the state with a tax credit, also creates jobs. Gianaris was a lead supporter when the legislation was created and later expanded.

Sen. Peralta Holds Outer-Borough Taxi Plan Forum

At a public meeting on a plan he supported to allow outer-borough livery cabs, or car services, to pick up street hails, state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-Jackson Heights) played the role of conflict mediator when the session turned into a heated debate in Corona.

After a representative from the Taxi and Limousine Commission gave a presentation outlining the plan, cabbies, base operators and other stakeholders present alternately jeered and cheered in both Spanish and English during a contentious 45-minute Q- and-A.

Governor Signs Peralta’s 'Chica Cards' Bill Into Law

State Senator Jose R. Peralta’s bill targeting the distribution of pimps' business cards along a stretch of more than 40 blocks of Roosevelt Avenue was signed into law Wednesday by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Senator Peralta introduced the bill in response to parental outrage and community frustration with the thriving local sex trade.  The cards, featuring pictures of naked and minimally clad women and phone numbers to call for “free delivery,” have for years littered sidewalks on Roosevelt Avenue and adjacent streets.
