Governor Gets High Marks on First State of the State, But More Needs to be Done for Communities of Color

By Senator Ruth Hassell-ThompsonChairwoman - New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative CaucusLow-income and middle-income New Yorkers are hurting from the combined effects of high property taxes, unemployment and underemployment, health care premium increases, and cuts to public services. Latin American News Dispatch

by Amy Elmgren

November 29, 2010

A new federal program called Secure Communities makes many residents of New York feel anything but safe.

Secure Communities has been implemented in 33 states and will take effect in New York this fall, unless residents at the state or municipal level are given the choice to opt out.

Statement From Senate Majority Conference Leader John L. Sampson On World AIDS Day

AIDS has taken a breathtaking toll on our families and communities.
