Strengthening Women's Rights in New York

For the second year in a row, I am proud to report that the New York State Senate passed its Women's Equality Agenda, a momentous package of bills to further protect and ensure the rights of women in New York.

These landmark measures will empower women and break down barriers that perpetuate violence, discrimination, and inequality.

Unbelievably though, the State Assembly left Albany without even bothering to vote on these important bills, and they can't become law until the Assembly acts. We need YOUR help to move the Assembly to action!

Millions of women across New York State are on the verge of winning an historic victory at the State Capitol, but we need YOUR help!

The State Senate recently approved approved a landmark new "Women's Equality Package," which includes a key reform to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work.

I was proud to vote for this package in the Senate, but our job isn't done yet. That's why I'm launching a new petition drive designed to encourage the State Assembly to take final action on these bills without delay.

PENFIELD, N.Y. – Today, Senator Ted O’Brien stood with women’s and health care advocates, including the non-profits Made the Same Inc., the Western New York Ovarian Cancer Project and Gilda’s Club of Rochester, to discuss the serious health risk posed to women by ovarian cancer during its National Awareness Month.

Ovarian cancer is highly treatable if caught early, but current screening methods are unreliable and early symptoms are so minor that they are often dismissed by doctors. The disease will affect roughly 1 in 70 women in their lifetimes.

Statement from Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on Women's Equality Day

“Today is Women’s Equality Day when we commemorate the historic passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women the right to vote. Statement From Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins Regarding the Voting Down of Choice Amendment

"No one would believe that in 2013 there were not enough Senators willing to vote to protect the health and equality of women.

In 1970, when choice was first passed in New York, 12 Republican Senators joined a majority of their Democratic colleagues to support this landmark legislation. In our state, women’s health has never been a Republican or Democratic issue. I find it shocking that 43 years later not one Senate Republican stood up for women’s equality."
