The lifetime achievements of Brooklyn native Dorothy Burnham were recognized and lauded by NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) during the reading of a Senate resolution, which was unanimously passed by the full Senate during the final days of the 2011 Legislative Session. The resolution paid tribute to Dorothy Burnham’s many notable contributions to our public education system, the advancement of civil rights, and to the promotion of racial and economic equality. Ms. Burnham was also honored for her designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Friends of the People's World. “Dorothy Burnham is a Renaissance Woman,” said Senator Montgomery.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) has named Lindsay Farrell, President and CEO of the Open Door Family Medical Centers, a 2011 New York State Woman of Distinction.  Each year, the NY Senate honors a select group of outstanding women who have enriched the quality of life in our communities and our state.

In her opening remarks at the public ceremony held recently in the State Capitol, Senator Oppenheimer praised Farrell for her “tireless efforts in making quality, affordable health care a reality for economically disadvantaged residents of Westchester County.  Her dedication and vision has quite literally ‘opened the door’ to  a brighter, healthier future for countless children and families.”

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) is pleased to announce that last month Christa Caldwell of Lockport was recognized as a 2011 New York State “Woman of Distinction.”

Barbara Medina was born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to parents from the Island of Puerto Rico. Ms. Medina is single mother of three wonderful children and has spent fourteen successful years as an Executive in the Marketing business. Ms. Medina’s career allowed her to travel to different parts of the United States developing new businesses and venturing with other companies. The experience has helped her become a voice amongst the voiceless and the value of being an independent woman.

State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon) honored Susan Boudreau of Bay Shore as a 2011 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” at the State Capitol on May 24, 2011.   The Senate honored distinguished women from throughout the state at an Albany reception, where each honoree's photograph and biography became part of a special exhibit proclaiming the contributions of exemplary New York women.

Senator Johnson explained that the Senate’s Women of Distinction program was created as part of the Senate’s celebration of Women’s History Month. The program, which started in 1998, honors exceptional achievement, personal excellence and outstanding, courageous and heroic actions on the part of individual women from all across the State.

NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery (D-Brooklyn) recently received two awards, which distinguish her as a visionary leader who is committed to ensuring that all people have equal access to quality education and every opportunity for positive life experiences.

Senator Montgomery was presented the Distinguished Alumna Award by the New York University (NYU) Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
