Issues: Jobs & Employment

STATEMENT ON 2014-2015 EXECUTIVE BUDGET

The 2014-2015 State Budget address delivered today by Governor Cuomo puts New York State in a great position to build upon the work we have done in recent years to control spending, cut taxes and invest in initiatives that create new jobs and revitalize our economy.

Working together, we have put a stop to the decades of late and unbalanced budgets by passing three consecutive early budgets.  I am hopeful that this year we can continue that trend.

It was two years ago when Senate Republicans led the fight to pass a property tax cap that helped to rein in burdensome property taxes and reduced middle-class tax rates to their lowest levels in 60 years.  This year, I’m eager to provide continued tax relief to hardworking New Yorkers by making the property tax cap and middle-class tax cuts permanent.

In addition, it’s also key that we work to continue to cut red tape and foster an environment that enables businesses to expand and create jobs. In order to do so, we should work to eliminate corporate taxes for manufacturers and do away with the onerous energy tax surcharge to promote business growth.

Senator Griffo Statement on Alcoa Announcement

"I’m disappointed to hear of Alcoa’s decision to close its remaining two potlines at the East Plant earlier than originally planned. My hope is that the company takes advantage of state and federal programs to help its affected workers transition to new jobs within or outside the organization. My office stands ready to assist anyone who is left without adequate employment as a result of this decision.

Senator Young Joins Senate Colleagues in Urging Passage of "Jobs for Heroes" Program

For Release: Immediate, January 14, 2014

Senate Bill 2803-B Would Provide Opportunities for Service-Disabled Veterans

ALBANY - Businesses owned by disabled veterans would achieve preference for procuring state contracts in a bill cosponsored by Senator Catharine Young (R, C, I-Olean).

The NY Jobs for Heroes program mirrors a successful federal initiative and would establish in New York State a three percent contract set-aside for service-disabled veteran businesses in obtaining state contracting and subcontracting opportunities.

“We owe it to our veterans to increase the job opportunities available to them. Too many come home after serving our country only to be unable to find gainful employment. For those who have sustained service-connected disabilities, the debt we owe is even greater. This important bill is one way we can ensure they can come home to New York and have opportunities to thrive as they return to civilian life,” said Senator Young.

Session priorities: tax relief, economic development and ethics reform must be the Legislature's focus

This essay by Senator O'Brien ran in the Democrat & Chronicle on January 11, 2014

As a new legislative session in Albany begins, I am preparing to address serious challenges to our region’s well-being.

During his State of the State address, the governor made it clear that upstate tax relief is his top priority. Mine, too. Eliminating corporate and energy taxes for upstate manufacturers and implementing the governor’s call for additional property tax relief are on the top of my agenda, as well.

Senator Griffo's Weekly Column #1: The Right Route For Government

Happy New Year!

My wife and I did some traveling for the holidays. Our destination was the same as the year before – and many years before that. One thing had changed, however. We didn’t agree on how to get there.

Governing is a lot like a road trip. All participants share a common destination, but the disagreements are always about what exact route to take.

State legislators and the governor, regardless of political affiliation, all want to help New York attract good-paying jobs and grow our economy. We also want to invest in our children and keep spending in check while maintaining services.

This week, Governor Cuomo will unveil his roadmap in a State of the State address. As always, I’m looking forward to hearing his plan.
