SENATOR LARKIN PASSES NEW VETERAN’S SERVICE CREDIT BILL

The New York State Senate today passed new legislation (S5937) dealing with service credit for our veterans. This bill is different from the previously passed legislation (S4124) which passed the Senate unanimously earlier this session.

The previous bill had an appropriation of $31.5 million and this bill has an appropriation of $24.8 million. According to the Assembly sponsor of this bill, the $24.8 million estimate was provided by the division of the budget.

“I will continue to do all that is asked of me in support of this legislation,” said Senator Bill Larkin (R,C – Cornwall-On-Hudson). “Regardless of where and when our veterans have served they are owed this debt of gratitude.”

Chanukah is the celebration of Miracles!

"Chanukah is the celebration of miracles, a reminder that all things are possible," Senator Parker said.  "As you celebrate the spirit of Chanukah with friends and family, I wish you health, happiness and good fortune." The holiday celebrates a legendary victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jews, over a Greek army that occupied the Holy Land.  After the battle, the victorious Maccabees found only a one day supply of oil in the temple to light the lamps.  But the oil burned miraculously for eight days, the story says.

Senator Gallivan Backs Military Service Buyback Bill for All Veterans

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) is urging the State Senate to override Governor Cuomo’s veto of a bill (S.7839) which would extend New York’s Military Service Credit Law to all active public employees who served in the military, allowing them to purchase up to three years of retirement credit for their military service.  Under the existing law, only veterans who served during specified conflicts are eligible to participate in the buyback program.

VETERANS’ SERVICE CREDIT LEGISLATION SENT TO THE GOVERNOR

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced today that Senate bill S.7839 has been sent to Governor Cuomo for his review and action.  This legislation, an extension of the Veterans Service Credit Law of 2000, would allow all honorably discharged veterans who are members of the New York State Public Retirement System to purchase up to three years of service credit for military service.  Currently, only public employees who served in the armed forces during certain military conflicts are permitted to receive this pension benefit.
