Senator Bonacic Advocates for Governor Cuomo to Sign S1885-C Into Law: Volunteer Firefighter Applicants Would Be Checked for Prior Sex Offenses

Senator Bonacic spoke at a press conference today at the Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Company advocating for the Governor to sign Senate Bill 1885-C into law.  This Bill would allow the fire chief to authorize a  background check on an applicant who wants to be a volunteer firefighter to see if there are any sex offense convictions.  The fire chief would have the authority to deny the submission should the applicant have prior sex offense convictions.

Meeting Schenectady Fire Dept Chief Ray Senecal

Met with Chief Ray Senecal and many members of the Schenectady Fire Department yesterday. The 120-member Department provides mutual aid to the surrounding towns in Schenectady County, as well as regional Haz Mat and Emergency Medical Services. Chief Senecal oversees the busiest fire department in New York and one of the busiest in the entire country, with more than 21,700 responses in 2012.

Legislative Notebook: State Initiatives of Interest to Veterans

Here is a partial listing of bills I have supported this session to aid New York’s former servicemen and servicewomen. These initiatives will now go to Governor Cuomo for final action.

-- Legislation I co-sponsored was passed by both houses (S.7839, first introduced as S.4714)) to extend the Military Service Credit Law of 2000 to all veterans who have served in the military. Right now, public employees who served in the armed forces may purchase up to three years of pension credit only if their military service occurred during specified conflicts. This measure will expand this opportunity to public employee veterans who also served their country in peacetime.

$250,000 Grant To Aid Cortland County Emergency Communications

CORTLAND, 06/24/14 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced that a $250,000 legislative grant he secured will assist with the cost of an emergency communications equipment upgrade  for Cortland County law enforcement officials.

“It is imperative that our law enforcement officials and first responders have the tools they need when they are called into duty, starting with a reliable communication network,” said Senator Seward.  “This legislative grant will help Cortland County’s law enforcement officials do their job safely and efficiently, and will not come with an added cost to county taxpayers.”

SENATOR MARTINS & ASSEMBLYWOMAN SCHIMEL: TRUSS NOTIFICATION BILL PASSED BY STATE LEGISLATURE

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) and Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck) announced that legislation they sponsored to help protect volunteer firefighters has been passed by the State Legislature. The legislation (S6675C/A1869D), which passed with broad bipartisan support, would help save firefighters from the early collapse of residential structures by establishing a truss construction notification system for residential properties.
