Senator Hassell-Thompson’s statement regarding the two destructive fires in Mount Vernon

“Yesterday, our community witnessed the destruction of two homes due to separate fires.  Thankfully, there was no loss of life, but 27 people have now been displaced.  Currently, the American Red Cross and volunteers are assisting these residents and I am sure that all of us in Mount Vernon will work together to provide any additional help needed.  I would like to thank the Mount Vernon Firefighters for their quick responses and bravery.”

Senator Kevin Parker Calls for Support of Legislation to Improve Emergency Responses Involving ‘Emotionally Disturbed’

(Brooklyn, NY) –  Today, State Senator Kevin Parker stood in solidarity with Communities for Crisis Intervention Teams (www.ccitnyc.org) – a coalition of 50 behavioral health providers and concerned citizens, and Brooklyn Borough President and retired New York Police Department Captain, Eric Adams, on City Hall steps to urge the Governor and Mayor to support the creation of specially trained Crisis Intervention Teams (CITs). The proposed CIT training would enable the NYPD to better respond to the 100,000 ‘emotionally disturbed person’ (EDP) calls received annually.

New Parameters For Emergency Services Loan Fund

ALBANY, 10/22/13 – A highly successful state loan program to assist first responders is changing with the times under legislation (S.3728B) signed into law today. The legislation was sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) and increases the amounts of allowable loans under the emergency services loan fund.

“Our first responders put their lives on the line every time they answer an emergency call and need to be outfitted with the latest safety gear,” said Senator Seward. “Emergency equipment costs, like everything else, continue to rise, and it is essential that this successful loan program evolves to meet the changing needs of our fire and rescue squads.”

Senator Farley Honors Fallen Firefighters

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady) had the honor and privilege to speak at the 2013 Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Albany on October 8th. The annual ceremony is held during Fire Prevention Week and honors those who gave their lives in the line of duty. The memorial was first dedicated in 1988 and now holds 2,381 names on the wall.

 

"It is important that we always remember, and recognize, the service -- and sacrifice -- made by our firefighters," Senator Farley said. "On behalf of the New York State Senate, let me express our gratitude and appreciation to our firefighters and their families."

Three Western New York Firefighters Among Those Honored at New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial

Ronald J. Keddie, Michael J. Chiapperini, Tomasz M. Kaczowka, and Six Other Firefighters Posthumously Honored in Memorial Ceremony Held in Albany

ALBANY - Today, three Western New York firefighters, and six more from throughout New York State, who lost their lives in the line of duty were honored at the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial. With family, friends, and hundreds of firefighters there to pay their respects, Lieutenant Governor Robert J. Duffy led a ceremony in adding the names of nine fallen firefighters to the memorial.

“Firefighters from across the state came to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of these individuals. We must never forget the fact that our first responders risk their lives every day, and for that we are eternally grateful,” said Senator Catharine M. Young (R,C,I-Olean), who attended the ceremony to memorialize the nine brave firefighters honored.

Senator Farley Offers Safety Tips as Part of Fire Prevention Month

October is National Fire Prevention Month and as part of that commemoration, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) offers safety tips.

"Protecting our loved ones is the responsibility of every parent, neighbor and citizen," Senator Farley said. "That's why it is important to stay informed on fire safety and to take steps to protect yourself and your families."

Senator Farley said it is important that everyone in your family knows to call 911 to report a fire or other emergency. Have your children practice what they would say on the phone in case of a real emergency.

Irvington Fire Dept. 133rd Annual Inspection

Senator Stewart-Cousins took part in the annual tradition of inspecting firetruck engines and equipment to make sure that they are in good working condition at Irvington Fire Department's 133rd Annual Inspection on Saturday, October 5th. At this special event, the Senator had the pleasure of meeting some of New York's Bravest, many of whom have been serving the Village of Irvington for more than twenty years.

Larkin Bills Approved by Governor

Three pieces of legislation were signed into law by Governor Cuomo announced the bills’ sponsor, Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson).   Of the three bills, two were local legislation dealing with Orange County’s one percent sales tax extension and conveying land in the Thiells-Roseville Fire District.  The other piece of legislation dealt with requiring hospitals to screen newborns for congenital heart defects.
