Senate Passes Bill to Honor Fallen Firefighters

Legislation Also Passed that Allows Volunteer Firefighters to be Absent from Work During States of Emergency

The Senate apassed a bill (S.6368A) that would allow members of volunteer fire departments and volunteer ambulance squads to take an authorized absence from work when they respond to a state of emergency.

Senator Jack M. Martins strongly supported the bill. “Our firefighters and emergency personnel are always to respond it times of emergency. They should have the security to know that their jobs will be protected when they are serving to protect their communities in times when there is a state of emergency,” he said.

Skelos (R, Rockville Centre) that would ensure the names of firefighters who are killed while performing services in the line of duty be included on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.7458), sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R, Rockville Centre) that would ensure the names of firefighters who are killed while performing services in the line of duty be included on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.   “Our firefighters put their lives on the line each and every time they respond to a distress call,” Senator Skelos said.  “They all deserve our respect, and those that give their lives in the service of others while in the line of duty deserve to be included in a lasting memorial such as the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.”

MARK DAVIS' FAMILY AT THE CAPITOL TO WITNESS SENATE PASSAGE OF "MARK'S LAW"

Mark Davis' family were in the Senate Chamber 5/22 to watch as "Mark's Law" won the Senate's approval in an overwhelming, bipartisan vote.

The photo above shows Mark's brother, Michael; sister, Maricia; Mom, Marsha, and Dad, Larry, with Senator Ritchie, in the Senate Chamber prior to the vote.

"I hope (Mark) gets a chance to hear it, sense it, feel it somehow or someway. Isn't that what makes life worth living? Things like this? When people come together and change things to a better degree. That's what it's all about," said Marsha.

Senator Martins Attends Groundbreaking for New Fire Station

Senator Jack M. Martins was honored to attend the groundbreaking for the new fire station or the Roslyn Highlands Fire Department in East Hills.

“The Roslyn Highlands Fire Department has a rich history of providing valuable fire services for the communities it serves. This will enhance the volunteers’ ability to provide service when they respond to calls from residents. I want to commend Chief Robert Duchnowski, 1st Deputy Chief Adam Boll and 2nd Deputy Chief Michael Gannon and all the members of the department for their service,” Senator Martins said.

Senator Martins Meets with Leaders of Fire Services

Senator Jack M. Martins met with leaders of the volunteer fire services at the Albertson Fire Department to discuss their legislative agenda. The recent brush fires on Long Island served as a reminder of how important the volunteer fire services are here to our communities. The volunter firefighters answer calls for emergency each day, coming to the aid of residents and businesses. Senator Martins wanted to meet and hear what legislative items are important for the fire services.
