State Passes Fiscally Responsible Budget That Respects Taxpayers

Budget Comes Early, Controls Spending and Holds The Line On Taxes

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan hailed the 2012 state budget today as lawmakers approved the spending plan ahead of the April 1st deadline, marking the second consecutive year New York State will enact an on-time budget.

“Passing a second on-time budget in as many years is indicative of the larger progress we’ve seen lately in Albany. Just as late budgets were once a symbol of dysfunction, on-time budgets are symbolic of continued progress,” the Senator said. “Even more important than passing an on-time budget, is that we passed a fiscally responsible budget that respects New York’s taxpayers and keeps the State moving forward.”

Peer to Peer Pilot Program Targeted to Assist Veterans Suffering from PTSD and TBI

Sayville, NY- Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) announced today that the New York State Senate, Assembly and Governor Andrew Cuomo, approved funding for the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program, a pilot program for four counties, including Suffolk County, to help returning veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) by offering a Peer to Peer mentoring program.

Governor Cuomo released the following announcement on March 27, 2012:

The Budget continues the Governor’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while creating jobs and strengthening communities across the state. It closes a multi-billion dollar deficit with no new taxes, fees or gimmicks, limits spending growth to two percent or below for the second year in a row, and launches the New York Works Task Force to invest billions of dollars to rebuild the state's roads, bridges, parks, and other infrastructure and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Mahopac, N.Y. – (3/16/12) – The students at Mahopac High School welcomed Senator Greg Ball’s (R, C – Patterson) traveling Veterans’ Wall of Fame on Friday afternoon in Mahopac, NY. The wall pays tribute to the twenty-seven veterans from throughout the Hudson Valley, including Mahopac resident Retired Corporal Josef Tschinkel. Each city, town and village within the Senator’s district was asked to nominate a Veteran and they were all honored at a Veterans’ Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony back in November

SENATE PASSES 2012-13 BUDGET RESOLUTION

Gallivan: “Senate Plan Cuts Taxes, Reforms Medicaid, Protects Seniors and Schools.”

The New York State Senate voted to approve its 2012-13 Senate Budget resolution, continuing its focus on state spending, job creation, and structural reform to government.

The Senate budget, at just under $132.5 billion, keeps the total state spending increase below two percent, and spends less than the Executive Budget. The budget closes a $2 billion budget deficit and builds on last year’s successes in putting the state’s fiscal house in order.

Medford, NY- Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and Assemblyman Dean Murray (R, C- East Patchogue) presented The New York State Senate Veteran Hall of Fame Memorial in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Michael Murphy to the Patchogue-Medford High School this past Thursday, March 8, 2012. Lt. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who gave his life while fighting in Afghanistan, was also a graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School.

A proud 88-year-old retired Sergeant Squad Leader stood amongst teenagers and local politicians at Hendrick Hudson High school Tuesday, honored to be a part of the Veterans Wall of Fame. WWII Veteran Frank Campanaro, a Town of Cortlandt resident, said he was surprised to be picked out of the many veterans in the area to be featured as one of the 27 featured with photographs and biographies on the Wall. New York State 40th District Senator Greg Ball and his Veterans Committee created the wall last year. Featured veterans were nominated by their local municipalities.

Zeldin & McDonald Host Public Hearing on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Combat Veterans

Albany, N.Y – State Senator Lee Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) and State Senator Roy McDonald (R- Saratoga) hosted a public hearing on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Combat Veterans in Albany this past Wednesday, February 29, 2012, to gain information to help improve early diagnoses, increase access to treatment, and provide crisis and support services.

Both McDonald (above left) and Zeldin (above right) have both served in the military. McDonald served in the U.S. Army’s First Cavalry Division as a Forward Observer in the Vietnam War. In the summer of 2006, while assigned to the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division, Zeldin deployed to Iraq with an infantry battalion of fellow paratroopers in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
