RITCHIE BILL OFFERING TAX BREAK FOR MILITARY RESERVISTS PASSES SENATE

A bill sponsored by Senator Patty Ritchie (R-C, Heuvelton) that could let military reservists cut their property tax bill was passed Monday by the Senate.

The measure, S.5231, gives local counties, cities, towns and villages an option to offer reservists the same property tax benefit that is currently available to other veterans who served their nation during specific periods of conflict.

“The changing nature of threats to our nation has also changed the demands that we put on the men and women of our military reserves, who are increasingly called upon to serve side by side with active duty military to defend our freedom and way of life,” Senator Ritchie said.

“These are our ‘citizen soldiers’ who often times interrupt their careers and spend long stretches away from the families, communities and friends—just like those in the active duty service—but aren’t entitled to the same benefits back home. This bill shows our gratitude and respect for all that they do for us.”

Senator LaValle Nominates Yaphank’s Eugene Smith to Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame.

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle has nominated Yaphank Vietnam War veteran Eugene ‘Gene’ Smith  to the New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame. Smith will be inducted with veterans from throughout New York State at a Capitol ceremony on Tuesday, June 14.

“Eugene Smith is deserving of a place among New York State’s elite veterans for heroic and gallant service to his country during the Vietnam War,” said LaValle.

Smith, LaValle said, was awarded numerous commendations and medals for his service including three Purple Hearts, a Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal,  Vietnam Combat Medal, Air Medals and a Bronze Star.

LaValle And Thiele Announce New Legislation Increasing Veteran Property Tax Exemptions

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. (I, D, WF-Sag Harbor) were joined today by Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst to announce the introduction of new State Legislation which would allow municipalities to increase the maximumproperty tax exemptions under the alternative veteran’s exemptions.

A.8186/S.5597 would further amend the Real Property Tax Law by providing exemptions to veterans which more appropriately reflect the recent rise in real property values. Under the proposed legislation the new cap for wartime veterans would increase from $54,000 to $75,000; from $36,000 to $50,000 for combat veterans; and, from $180,000 to $250,000 for disabled veterans.

Senator Ball Announces Purple Heart “Forever” Stamp

ALBANY, NY (5/4/2011) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs, joined Senator William Larkin, Jr. (R, C – Cornwall-On-Hudson), to announce that the U.S. Postal Service has classified the Purple Heart postage stamp as a “Forever” stamp, guaranteeing that the stamp will remain in circulation.

Prior to the “Forever” classification, each postage increase jeopardized the continued circulation of the Purple Heart stamp.

Chairman Ball Announces Historic Bill Banning Protests at Military Funerals

 

ALBANY, NY- Senator Greg Ball announced his support today for a Bill which would ban the ability of individuals and groups to protest at the funeral services of military personnel. The bill which is being Co-sponsored by Ball, along with Senator Zeldin, is an attempt to protect members of the military and their families from groups who in recent years have used military funerals as a platform to gain attention for themselves and their agendas. Senator Ball stated "I believe this bill will have unanimous support from our Majority Conference and will be an important and fitting tribute to all those serving in uniform, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. BROOKLYN 5K RUN TO BENEFIT SEMPER FI FUND SET FOR SATURDAY

Veterans Return from Honor Flight

On Sunday, May 15th, Senator Robach had the privilege to welcome back World War II veterans from their Honor Flight over the weekend. This was the second Honor Flight this year put on by Honor Flight Rochester. The organization's goal is to take every veteran, who otherwise could not or would not go, to Washington D.C. During the ceremony, students from Aquinas Institute, Canandaigua Academy, and Medina presented donations to Honor Flight Rochester.
