Senator Ball Announces Purple Heart “Forever” Stamp

ALBANY, NY (5/4/2011) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs, joined Senator William Larkin, Jr. (R, C – Cornwall-On-Hudson), to announce that the U.S. Postal Service has classified the Purple Heart postage stamp as a “Forever” stamp, guaranteeing that the stamp will remain in circulation.

Prior to the “Forever” classification, each postage increase jeopardized the continued circulation of the Purple Heart stamp.

Chairman Ball Announces Historic Bill Banning Protests at Military Funerals

 

ALBANY, NY- Senator Greg Ball announced his support today for a Bill which would ban the ability of individuals and groups to protest at the funeral services of military personnel. The bill which is being Co-sponsored by Ball, along with Senator Zeldin, is an attempt to protect members of the military and their families from groups who in recent years have used military funerals as a platform to gain attention for themselves and their agendas. Senator Ball stated "I believe this bill will have unanimous support from our Majority Conference and will be an important and fitting tribute to all those serving in uniform, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. In coordination with my efforts to restore funding to our veterans homes this is one of many veterans bills that we will pass on this historic day and I ask New Yorkers to call upon the Assembly to do the same, immediately."

BROOKLYN 5K RUN TO BENEFIT SEMPER FI FUND SET FOR SATURDAY

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, 22nd District), Congressman Michael Grimm (R-C, 13th District) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-C, 60th District) are among those expected to participate in the 5K Run to benefit the Semper Fi Fund this Saturday, May 21, 2011 starting 10:00 a.m. at 81st Street and Shore Road.

The 5K course runs along the scenic Narrows Promenade, along the Shore Road Bike Path, and an awards ceremony and raffle will take place at Cannonball Park, 101st Street and 4th Avenue, immediately following the race.

Veterans Return from Honor Flight

On Sunday, May 15th, Senator Robach had the privilege to welcome back World War II veterans from their Honor Flight over the weekend. This was the second Honor Flight this year put on by Honor Flight Rochester. The organization's goal is to take every veteran, who otherwise could not or would not go, to Washington D.C. During the ceremony, students from Aquinas Institute, Canandaigua Academy, and Medina presented donations to Honor Flight Rochester. Thank you to all the brave men and women who have served our great country and who continue to fight for our freedom around the world. An effort to honor military heroes that began in the New York State Senate 11 years ago has now resulted in the U.S. Postal Service announcing that the Purple Heart postage stamp has been classified as a “Forever” stamp, ensuring that it will continue in circulation.  The U.S. Postal Service officially unveiled and issued the Purple Heart “Forever” stamp in on May 5, 2011.

Boy Scout Troop and Pack 169 Helps Japan

On Saturday, April 2nd, Senator Robach had the opportunity to attend a 'Help Us Help Japan' fundraising event at the Danforth Community Center in Rochester. The event was organized by Boy Scout Troop and Pack 169 and all donations and proceeds went to the Japan relief efforts. Scouts collected bottles and cans and also visited with the Jr. ROTC Drill Team.

Website Offers Qualifying Guidelines for Using FreeFile 

Queens, NY, March 15, 2011 – NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Queens), who serves on the Senate’s Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, urged taxpayers to take advantage of FreeFile – a program providing free state and federal tax preparation and e-filing services to qualified New York State taxpayers.  Half of New York’s taxpayers qualify for free or reduced fees to file electronically through FreeFile. You may be eligible if you earned $58,000 or less in 2010 or if you served in the military in 2010.

Senate Passes Legislation to Limit Protests at Military Funerals, Additional Legislation to Support Veterans

The New York State Senate Monday passed legislation (S.3901) that would limit protests at military funerals.  Called “The Specialist Thomas Wilwerth Military Dignity Act,” the proposed law is named for an Iraq War Veteran who lost his life in combat in 2006.

 

 

This legislation is part of a package of Veterans bills that was passed by the Senate Monday. 

 

 

In addition, the Senate passed legislation that would significantly enhance the protection of property, rights and services available to current and former military personnel. The seven bills would build upon the Senate’s ongoing commitment to increase support for veterans and their families.
