FORT DRUM’S COL. TERRENCE ROCHE NAMED TO SENATE VETERANS HALL OF FAME

Col. Terrence Roche, the ex-Garrison Commander who oversaw the dramatic growth of Fort Drum from a small training facility into a premier Army post—and the region’s largest local employer—was inducted into the New York State Senate “Veterans Hall of Fame” at a special ceremony held Tuesday at the Capitol.

Col. Roche was selected from among 29 nominees from Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties as Senator Patty Ritchie’s inductee. To read more about Col. Roche and this year's other inductees, click here.

Sgt. Marlene Roll Receives One Of New York State’s Highest Honors

ALBANY– Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R,C,I – 59th District) honored Alden resident, Sergeant Marlene Roll, today by inducting the Gulf War veteran into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Sgt. Members of Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division were honored Monday at “10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day,” an event held at the State Capitol, hosted by Senator Patty Ritchie.

Senator DeFrancisco Honors Leslie Reichardt for His Military Service

Senator John A. DeFrancisco had the pleasure of presenting Leslie Reichardt, Lt. Col, USAF Retired, a WW II veteran, with a certificate of appreciation on Armed Forces Day.  The CNY Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America held a dinner meeting on May 18, 2013, at which Senator DeFrancisco presented the certificate and spoke about legislation to better protect and support active military members and veterans.

State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced that on Monday, May 20th, “10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day” will be celebrated at the State Capitol.

The second annual event, organized by Senator Ritchie, will celebrate the commanders and soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division for their ongoing role in our nation’s defense, as well as the post itself for the key role it plays in the region’s economy.

“It’s surprising that many people across New York State just aren’t aware of the role Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division play in our nation’s defense, nor do they know what a tremendous impact the post has on our North Country economy,” said Senator Ritchie.

“I am thrilled to once again host 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Day at the Capitol, and take the opportunity to expose our entire state to this very important installation, as well as the brave men and women who fight for our freedom and call Fort Drum ‘home’ ” said Senator Ritchie.

Roche is a 26 year military veteran who commanded at every level from platoon to Garrison at posts from Buffalo to Paris and Korea with wartime service in Vietnam.

Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R-C-I, Shirley) today joined Senators David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Chairman of the Senate Mental Health Committee and Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee as well as Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Putman County Executive Mary Odell to announce funding for the expansion of the PFC Joseph Dwyer PTSD Peer-to-Peer Veterans Counseling program to Westchester, Rockland and Putman Counties. The continuation and expansion of the PFC Joseph Dwyer PTSD Peer-to-Peer Veterans Counseling program was approved as part of the 2013-14 state budget.

Felder Pays Tribute to Military Personnel at West Point Day in Albany

Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) recently welcomed and paid tribute to men and women from the United States Military Academy at West Point at a reception on April 24, 2013 as part of the 61st Annual “West Point Day” held at the New York State Capitol in Albany.

The event was hosted by Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson), a retired Lieutenant Colonel who served 23 years on active duty in the United States Army. Both the Senate and the Assembly adopted Legislative Resolutions to commemorate the Academy’s visit and to honor the establishment of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Senator Martins Greets Sergeant Frame During West Point Day

During West Point Day in the New York State Senate on April 24, Senator Jack M. Martins greeted Sergeant Robert W. Frame from Albertson. Sergeant Frame is a 1998 graduate of Mineola High School. He enlisted in the Army after graduation. It was an honor for the Senator to greet a hometown hero who has served his country with pride while on the floor of the Senate to recognize the West Point Class of 2013.

Here in Central and Northern New York, we see yellow ribbons everywhere we go—on trees, bumper stickers, in businesses and prominently displayed outside homes. For a very long time, yellow ribbons have stood as a symbol of support and remembrance of the brave men and women who serve.
