Senator John DeFrancisco Recognizes a West Point Cadet from Central New York at the NYS Capitol

Senator John A. DeFrancisco recognized Cadet Sergeant Brian Callahan, a Central New York West Point cadet, during West Point Day at the New York State Capitol.  Callahan is a Syracuse native and a 2010 graduate of Bishop Grimes High School.

“All of these cadets are exceptional young men and women, but I am especially proud to honor Brian Callahan who is from Syracuse,” said Senator DeFrancisco. “Brian should be commended for his patriotism, dedication and strong commitment to our Nation. For Brian to answer the call to serve in this dangerous time is truly an inspiration to all of us.”

RITCHIE JOINS 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION COMMANDER TO HONOR VOLUNTEERS AT FORT DRUM CEREMONY

Volunteers Recognized for Nearly 185,000 Hours of Service

State Senator Patty Ritchie joined MG Stephen Townsend Thursday for Fort Drum’s annual Volunteer of the Year ceremony, where volunteers were honored for their 184,770 hours of service on the post last year. 

As the featured guest speaker, Senator Ritchie thanked the more than 50 volunteers being honored for their time and their service.

Senator Michael Gianaris Seeks Nominees for Veteran’s Hall of Fame

Queens, NY – Senator Michael Gianaris invited local residents to nominate veterans from the community whose service on behalf of our nation warrants induction into the New York State Veteran’s Hall of Fame.

This online Hall of Fame is designed to pay tribute to New Yorkers whose gallantry in the U.S. Armed Forces is complemented by service to their communities.

“The Senate takes this opportunity to honor the brave men and women who serve our nation and protect our freedom as members of the military,” said Senator Gianaris. “The Veteran’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to all who serve, but singles out for special recognition those whose sacrifices and service helped make our nation and our community better places to live.”

Senator Young was the guest speaker at this year’s St. Bonaventure ROTC Military Ball. Pictured here with Lieutenant Colonel Michael Bianchi, Master Sergeant Steven Stites and the ROTC students, Senator Young spoke about the values and life lessons she learned during her time at St. Bonaventure University. While the ROTC program is administered at St. Bonaventure, students from Houghton College and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford also participate.

Not only does the ROTC program provide tremendous leadership opportunities and a military training, but it is one of the main pathways to becoming a U.S. Army officer. In fact, St. Bonaventure University has produced more than 700 lieutenants for America's Army.

Marchione seeks nominations of veterans

Marchione seeks nominations of veterans

State Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-Halfmoon, announced she is accepting nominations for induction into the New York State Veterans’ Hall of Fame, a state website that pays tribute to distinguished veterans.

Marchione will select one veteran from the 43rd Senate district to be recognized.

The 43rd District includes Columbia and portions of Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties.

Nomination forms are available on the senator’s site — marchione@nysenate.gov.

The deadline for nominations is April 13.

SENATE PASSES BILL THAT WOULD PROHIBIT UNAUTHORIZED USE OF MILITARY IMAGES

Senator John A. DeFrancisco (R-I-C, Syracuse) announced that his legislation, which would make it a crime to use the name, image, or likeness of any current or former member of the armed forces or state militia for commercial purposes without permission (S3036), passed the New York state Senate today.

“There have been numerous incidents where the names of soldiers killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have been used without concern for the soldier or the soldier’s family,” said Senator DeFrancisco. “Our military members, veterans and their families have made tremendous sacrifices for our country, and it is essential that we respect their privacy.”

RITCHIE MEETS WITH VETS, DISCUSSES PFC. JOSEPH DWYER PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM

State Senator Patty Ritchie recently took part in Mental Health Awareness Day in Albany recently, speaking to veterans advocates and urging continued funding of the Pfc. Joseph Dwyer Peer Support Program for Veterans. 

Advocating for mental health services for veterans, Senator Patty Ritchie addressed the Mental Health Association in New York State (MHANYS) and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) at the Association's annual legislative lobby day rally in Albany.
