On Monday, November 11th, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke at the Town of Greenburgh's Annual Veterans Day Celebration, thanking the local veterans for their dedication in making our nation what it is today. Also, at the celebration were Town Councilman Ken Jones, Town of Greenburgh Chief of Police Joseph DeCarlo, Westchester County Legislator (District 8) Alfreda Williams and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (District 92).

VFW Empire Post #375's Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

Senator Stewart-Cousins thanked the veterans of the VFW Empire Post #375's for their service to our country at their Annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11th in Yonkers, NY. Senator Stewart-Cousins, whose father was a member of the "Buffalo Soldiers" 92nd Infantry Division and fought in Italy during WWII, mentioned in her speech, "Due to my father's and millions of other veterans' unrelenting persistence and selflessness to defend this country, we are able to enjoy days like Veterans' Day."

Genesee and Orleans Veterans' Memorial Highway bill signed into law

A bill sponsored by Senator George Maziarz and Assemblyman Steve Hawley creating the Genesee and Orleans Veterans' Memorial Highway” has been signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The legislation renames the stretch of State Route 98 from the border of Geneseeand Wyoming counties to the intersection with Lake Ontario State Parkway in Orleans County in an effort to recognize the sacrifice made by our courageous military heroes.

Span of Route 20A Will Connect At County Line With Wyoming County Veterans Memorial Highway

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R,C,I - 59th District) applauded Governor Cuomo today for taking time over the Veterans Day Weekend to sign legislation (S.4752 - Gallivan) designating a stretch of Route 20A as the "Livingston County Veterans Memorial Highway." The portion to be designated begins at I-390 and runs west to the Livingston County line, where it meets with a portion of Route 20A in Wyoming County already designated as the Wyoming County Veterans Memorial Highway.

Father and Son Honored in Veterans Day Medal Ceremony

Jesse Skinner Sr. and Jesse Skinner Jr. Receive Awards for Military Service

OLEAN - Recognizing their outstanding records of military service, U.S. Army veterans Jesse Skinner Jr. and his late father Jesse Skinner Sr. have finally received the military decorations they deserve.

During a ceremony at Jamestown Community College’s Dresser Rand Training & Conference Center in Olean today, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) presented Sergeant First Class Jesse Skinner Jr. with the military medals he and his late father, Private First Class Jesse Skinner Sr., earned while serving overseas. After being contacted by the Skinner family, Senator Young worked to ensure the honorable service of these two veterans was duly recognized and they received the long overdue awards their service warrants.

Senator Kevin Parker Introduces College Credits for Veterans

(Brooklyn, NY) – On the eve of the national Veterans Day holiday observance on Monday, November 11, 2013, Senator Kevin Parker (D-21), announced he would be introducing the NY CARES Act (New York College Aid for Returning Empire State Service members).  The bill requires New York’s public and private universities to accept military service for some college credit.

Seely Place Elementary School "Take A Vet To School Day"

On Wednesday, November 6th, Seely Place Elementary School in Edgemont participated in The History Channel's "Take A Vet To School Day", a national program that encourages communities and schools to invite veterans of all backgrounds to share their stories and receive thanks for their service on or around Veterans Day. At this event, Senator Stewart-Cousins spoke to a group of over 400 elementary school children about her father and brother's WWII and Vietnam War experiences and the importance of honoring veterans because of the vital roles they play in defending our nation.

Fellow New Yorkers:

On Veterans Day, Americans should pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans.  Whether combat veterans or Cold War veterans, all who served need to be given proper praise for a job well done.  Our veterans have faced hardships that a non-veteran could never fully understand.  Some have faced death in defending our nation’s freedom.  Veterans possess the core American values of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, selfless service, personal courage, and integrity.
