Sets Goal to Collect 100 Worn US Flags to Cheer Service Men and Women Abroad

State Senator Patty Ritchie announced that she is seeking 100 worn, tattered and faded American flags during the month of October as part of her “Stars for Our Troops” campaign to cheer 5,000 US service men and women overseas with a simple, patriotic reminder of home.

“The men and women of our military spend months in strange and dangerous lands far from home to protect the flag and the freedom it represents,” said Senator Ritchie. “This campaign allows us to retire a worn and used American flag in a dignified way that also tells a member of the US military that he or she is remembered, appreciated and respected.”

Senator Lee Zeldin Holds Second Meeting of The Blue Ribbon “John P. Jennings Veterans’ Advisory Panel”

Central Islip, N.Y. – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) held the second meeting of the Blue Ribbon “John P. Jennings Veterans’ Advisory Panel” this past Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Touro Law Center in Central Islip.

The panel was named in honor of Infantryman John P. Jennings, a Suffolk County resident who passed away on January 10, 2011. John’s long struggle with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) followed a deployment to Iraq from September 2004 to October 2005. This past February, Zeldin presented Jennings’ family with the New York State Liberty Medal, the highest award given by the New York State Senate for citizenry.

Honoring Clinton “Sonny” VanGelder, the first veteran laid to rest at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery

This week, I was deeply honored to attend the burial service for Clinton “Sonny” VanGelder of Geneva, who became the first veteran to be laid to rest at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Sonny was a dedicated American serviceman who represented his Country with distinction and honor during the Korean War. As a U.S. Air Force Veteran who trained at the Sampson Air Force Base, he was laid to rest on the very ground where he forged his commitment to our Nation 59 years ago.

JAMESTOWN WWII VET INDUCTED INTO SENATE’S VETERANS’ HALL OF FAME

JAMESTOWN – Jamestown resident Anthony “Tony” J. Costanzo has earned a special place of distinction in recognition of his meritorious military service during WWII and his tireless advocacy on behalf of his fellow veterans.

Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) hosted a special ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Chapter #865 in Jamestown on Friday to induct Tony as a member of the 2011 New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

"It is my honor to recognize Tony who has lived a life of service not only to his country but to his community as well. He embodies the definition of a true American hero and is the exact type of individual this Hall of Fame was created to honor," said Senator Young.
