67th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY A TIME TO MEMORIALIZE LOCAL HERO WHO FOUGHT

Senator Martins Marches in Mineola Memorial Day Parade

On Monday, May 30, the Mineola community commemorated Memorial Day with a parade that began at Wilson Park and ended in Mineola Memorial Park. The parade was led by American Legion Post #349 Commander Sal Cataldo and member of the Legion as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1305 Commander Manny Grilo and members of the VFW.

It was a day in which residents and organizations braved near 90 degree heat to say thank you to the veterans who have fought to preserve our freedom. Among the residents that marched in the parade were Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss, Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira and State Senator Jack M. Martins.

Williston Park American Legion Holds Everlasting Services on Memorial Day

Senator Martins Serves as Guest Speaker

Due to rain showers and dark skies early on Memorial Day morning, the Williston Park American Legion Post #144 did not hold its Memorial Day parade, but did have a stirring tribute to the veterans inside the post. The 55th Annual Post Everlasting Services paid tribute to all those who served, departed members and those who went off to service and sadly did not return.

Post commander Frank Oliveiri conducted the services. Reverend Christine van Liew of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection gave the invocation and then former Town of North Hempstead Supervisor John Kiernan introduced guest speaker, Senator Jack M. Martins.

OSWEGO COUNTY VETERANS NAMED TO SENATE ‘HALL OF FAME

Battle of the Bulge group among largest contingent of single campaign veterans; First multi-member group to receive honor

Senator Patty Ritchie (R-C, Heuvelton) has named the Oswego County “Battle of the Bulge” Veterans to the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame.

It’s the first time a group of veterans has been named collectively to the Hall of Fame, which was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.

“The Oswego County ‘Battle of the Bulge’ Veterans served their nation when they were needed most, and continued that legacy throughout decades of service to their communities,” Senator Ritchie said.

Purple Heart Stamp Is Forever

ONEONTA, 05/27/11 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today concluded a tour of his district, joining local veterans and postal officials to announce that the Purple Heart postage stamp has been classified as a “Forever” stamp, ensuring that it will continue in circulation as a lasting tribute to wounded veterans.

“As we approach Memorial Day it is important to recognize the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country and our way of life,” said Senator Seward.  “Classifying the Purple Heart stamp as a “Forever” stamp is an important step by the U.S. Postal Service in recognizing our military heroes.”

The New York State Senate passed a package of nine bills this week which will expand or launch new benefits programs for the brave New Yorkers who have fought for our nation’s freedom.

“Our veterans and active military personnel have made brave sacrifices on behalf of us all in their service to the nation,” Senator Montgomery said. “From access to housing, health care, and educational opportunities, the service that veterans have provided to our country entitles them to the very best from their state government, and New York aims to give it to them."
