On Saturday, July 30th, the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery was officially dedicated. Before the dedication ceremony began, Senator Nozzolio spoke with Rear Admiral Richard West, who was Keynote Speaker, and Commander Tom Watt, who served as Master of Ceremonies.The cemetery had been scheduled to open May 21.

William Stratis Named To The NYS Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced that he has nominated William Stratis to the New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame.

 

"It is an honor and a privilege for me to have nominated Bill Stratis to the Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame," said Larkin. "His dedication to the veterans of the Hudson Valley, coupled with the sacrifices he made during his time in the military, make him an outstanding addition to the Hall of Fame and an inspiration to all," said Larkin.

Music Director Andy Stobie, a popular local musician with a unique personal  connection to the former Sampson Naval Base, will lead the two dozen members of the Seneca Falls Community Band as they perform at the dedication of the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery on July 30th.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO SALUTES THE WOUNDED WARRIORS

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today joined with hundreds of local residents and cyclists in support of the annual Wounded Warriors bike ride. The ride helped raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides aid to seriously wounded military veterans. As part of the ride, over 30 Wounded Warriors, joined by hundreds of others local residents and cyclists, traveled 23 miles from Babylon Town Hall to Overlook Beach. Senator Fuschillo honored the Wounded Warriors at the ride’s kick-off ceremony hosted by Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone at Babylon Town Hall.

NEW WINDSOR — Dental and vision care are not among the benefits returning veterans receive once they separate from the service.

But a new program aimed at filling that void was announced Thursday at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor.

It's not a government program but a private business venture called Smiling On America's Heroes, in which local lawyer and Orange County Republican Party Chairman Bill DeProspo is a principal.

Chairman Ball Urges Action on Honor Deserving of New York Veterans

Carmel, N.Y. – (07/21/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson), Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, held a meeting in Putnam County to get the word out about legislation(S5381A/A1386A) that would create a State Veterans Cemetery in New York. The informational meeting, which was held at the Spain Memorial Cornerstone Park in Carmel, N.Y., was designed to educate the public about the legislation, as well as the United States Veterans Cemetery Grant Program.

GOVERNOR SIGNS BALL, CASTELLI MILITARY PROTECTION ACT

Brewster,  N.Y. – (07/18/11) – A bill that protects the jobs of public employees who are called to serve their country is now on the books in New York State. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed The Ball, Castelli Military Protection Act (S4583A) into law. The bill, sponsored by Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) and Assemblyman Robert Castelli (R, C – Goldens Bridge), protects public employees’ jobs when they are absent on military duty.

Commander Tom Watt, USN (Ret.) will serve as Master of Ceremonies at the official dedication ceremony for the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery on July 30th. In addition to his 20 years of service to our Nation including a year of duty in the Arabian Gulf, Mr. Watt is the Supervisor of Sampson State Park.

Senator Lee Zeldin Celebrates Purple Heart “Forever” Stamp

Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y. – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I-Shirley) presented a poster commemorating the introduction of the Purple Heart stamp as a Forever stamp to Commander Tim Lenihan (above right) of the William F. Taylor VFW Post 9486 in Lake Ronkonkoma. Senator Zeldin (above left), a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, is also the Senior Vice-Commander of VFW Post 8651 of the Mastics and Shirley.

The United States Postal Service officially unveiled and issued the Purple Heart Forever stamp on May 5, 2011 in San Diego, California.

The new classification ensures the Purple Heart stamp will continue in circulation and supporters will no longer need to advocate for its reissuance each time the price of stamps increases.

Examiner: Putnam Leg. Moves Forward on Veterans’ Cemetery

7/1/2011 - The Putnam County Legislature voted 7-1 to agree to take on the perpetual care, operations and maintenance of a proposed veterans’ cemetery in Southeast – should it be built – at a special full meeting at the Historic Courthouse in Carmel Wednesday night. Legislators, though, expressed concerns over financial and environmental issues and added wording to the resolution to ensure the project wouldn’t move forward without them having a second shot at it with more time to research the plan. …

Former commander of Blazing Star Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, nominated for inclusion in Veterans' Hall of Fame

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - ROSSVILLE - A true-blue patriot, Jordan T. Czerniawski fought for his country in the Korean War. And long after his active-duty days were over, he pledged his time to local veterans while remaining a fixture in the community as an upstanding individual. Czerniawski was honored by state Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island) earlier this month with a nomination into the New York State Veterans' Hall of Fame. The Rossville resident's wife of 59 years, Phyllis, accepted the honor on his behalf. Czerniawski, 79, passed away last December. The Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans in New York who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.
