U.S. Postal Service Makes Purple Heart Stamp “Forever”

An effort to honor military heroes that began in the New York State Senate 11 years ago has now resulted in the U.S. Postal Service announcing that the Purple Heart postage stamp has been classified as a “Forever” stamp, ensuring that it will continue in circulation.

The new classification as a “Forever” stamp means that Purple Heart postage stamps will continue in circulation and supporters will no longer need to advocate to maintain it each time the price of stamps increase.

The U.S. Postal Service officially unveiled and issued the Purple Heart “Forever” stamp in San Diego on May 5, 2011.

New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio today commended the United States Postal Service for making the postage stamp commemorating the Purple Heart medal a “forever” stamp, ensuring that this reminder of the tremendous sacrifices made by our Nation’s servicemen and women will always continue in circulation. Senator Nozzolio co-sponsored a special Legislative Resolution (J.1550) that was adopted by the State Senate thanking the Postal Service for classifying the Purple Heart stamp as a forever stamp.

Purple Heart Stamp to Last Forever

An effort to honor military heroes that began in the New York State Senate 11 years ago has now resulted in the U.S. Postal Service announcing that the Purple Heart postage stamp has been classified as a “Forever” stamp, ensuring that it will continue in circulation.

The campaign to create the Purple Heart Stamp was started in November 2000 by Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-On-Hudson), a 23 year Army combat veteran. After a massive letter writing effort by the Military Order of the Purple Heart and other veterans organizations, the stamp was first issued in 2003. Since that time, a letter writing effort to continue the Purple Heart stamp had to be conducted each time the price of a first class letter changed to ensure the stamp would continue.

Honor Flight Makes First 2011 Trip

On Saturday, April 9th, Senator Robach had the privilege to welcome back local Veterans following the first Honor Flight of 2011 at the Greater Rochester International Airport. 48 World War II veterans made the trip to Washington D.C. and visited the memorial built to honor all those who fought in that war. Senator Greg Ball (R, C, 40th District –Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess) has secured a staggering $11.5 Million for New York State Veterans during a tough budget battle in the Senate chamber, where all operating budgets were cut by 10% across the board.
