STATE SENATOR GIPSON COMMENDS NEW U.S. DOT SAFETY MEASURES FOR OIL TRAINS

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – New York State Senator Terry Gipson (D-Dutchess, Putnam) lauded the U.S. Department of Transportation for proposing new safety measures for the transportation of crude oil. In May of this year, Senator Gipson issued a letter to federal representatives urging the federal government to take “immediate, concrete and substantial action to protect our communities, our environment and our economy from the very real and ongoing risks of crude oil transportation on railways, specifically along the Hudson River.”

SENATOR MARTINS VISITS ST. MARY’S CHURCH IN MANHASSET TO HONOR FATHER ANTHONY REFALO FOR 25 YEARS OF SERVICE

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) recently visited St. Mary's Church in Manhasset to honor Father Anthony Refalo on his Silver Jubilee (25 years) of service as a priest. 

     Father Anthony served full-time at St. Mary's for nearly ten years before being transferred, but he continued to maintain a relationship with the parish. Even though he has lived in Malta since 1999, he returns twice a year, every year to the place he calls his "second home."

New York State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz Introduces Anti-Chokehold Legislation

New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) is introducing a Senate Bill to make the use of chokehold illegal in New York State. This bill "establishes the crime of strangulation in the first degree, disregard of banned employment procedures."

Senator Rev. Diaz stated: "Every time I see the video of Eric Garner, or think about Anthony Baez, it breaks my heart. As a State Senator and as a Minister I am obligated to do whatever I can to prevent another person from being a victim of chokehold. I pray that this amendment to the New York State Penal Law will in fact, protect people from this vicious crime."

The Dilemma that We Elected Officials Face

You should know that there are many times in politics when we are faced with especially delicate and sophisticated issues. There are times when our decisions may not hold up to everyone’s satisfaction.

You should know that when a person is elected to serve and represent the needs of others, the duties of that elected person often include appointing people to serve alongside them. In political reality, there are certain qualities of potential appointees, aside from professional qualifications, that we must consider: race, creed, color, and sex – to name a few.

New grants, totaling $10.9 million have been awarded to 68 Advantage After School Programs (AASPs) across New York State, providing thousands of school-age children with quality youth development opportunities for three hours at the end of each school of school-age children with quality youth development opportunities for three hours at the end of each school day.
