Albany  – Karen Gordon, the Executive Director of the Commission on Economic Opportunity, was honored by the New York State Senate as a 2010 Woman of Distinction at a ceremony at the Capital on Tuesday, May 24. Senator Roy McDonald selected Gordon as his nominee for the prestigious honor.

SENATE ACTS TO PROTECT NEW YORK’S MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Brooklyn - The New York State Senate yesterday passed a measure to prevent child and adult abuse and expand the authority of protective workers to enable full investigations into allegations of abuse. The bill, S.3306B, is sponsored by Senator Martin Golden (R-C, Brooklyn).

Senator Marty Golden stated, “This bill will provide protection for those in the highest need. Victims of abuse, at any age will benefit from the authority provided within this legislation. This legislation ensures that every effort is made to prevent abusers from getting away with this abuse and to continue to make an effort toward bettering our great state.”

Interactive Rent Regulations Forum & Rally

(Albany, NY) With rent regulations that protect affordable housing for over 2.5 million tenants set to expire June 15th, Senate and Assembly Democrats joined with NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn and housing advocates at an interactive rent forum and rally highlighting the critical need to extend and strengthen rent regulation laws before time runs out.Broadcast live over the Internet, via Twitter and Facebook, Senate and Assembly Democrats engaged housing advocates from across the state to stop the “tenant tax” and save their homes. Senate Democrats also launched an online petition drive dedicated to rent regulations.

STATEMENT BY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Almost four months ago the Senate passed the hard property tax cap legislation proposed by Governor Cuomo.  Since then, Senate Republicans have advocated every day for the enactment of a strong property tax cap. Other than the sunset provision and minor technical issues, we have reached a three-way agreement on a bill that achieves our goals and includes 95 percent of the bill we already passed and will finally put the brakes on skyrocketing property taxes.
