Under the shadow of the imposing Jamaica High School building, the afternoon sunlight bouncing off massive arched doors that once welcomed students to one of the city’s most highly reputable educational institutions, pupils, teachers and legislators this week slammed the mayor and chancellor for brushing them what they said amounted to educational “crumbs” while giving others fine dining.

Indian center told to divulge info

A Manhattan Supreme Court judge last week gave the embattled Indian Cultural and Community Center one month to supply the state inspector general with information about the investors who helped purchase part of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Campus in Bellerose for $1.8 million in 2008.

The nonprofit ICCC purchased property, which was later assessed at $7.3 million, from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York under the condition that it would be used solely as a community center.

According to court documents, this term was later modified to permit, under certain conditions, different uses 10 years later, with an additional payment of $1.7 million to the DASNY.

State Sen. Tony Avella slams city DOT for failing to fix hazardous cracked curbs City told one Queens woman there is a 23-year wait for new curbs

Some Queens homeowners, whose streets are marred by unsightly and potentially dangerous cracked curbs, say the city is ignoring their pleas for help.

“I have been calling and calling the city for years,” said Caroline Vereline, a Bellerose resident. “One time they told me they were 23 years behind schedule.”

Senator Farley Notes State-of-the State Message to Be Delivered Jan. 4th

Tomorrow, January 4th, the Governor will open the 2012 Legislative Session with his annual State-of-the-State Address. This speech will be given at 1:30 p.m. It will be broadcast live on public television, and can also be viewed online at http://www.governor.ny.gov The text of his message will also be posted on his website.

The State-of-the-State is a vision, or a road map, of what the Governor would like to see happen in New York State in 2012.

NYS Health Department Awards $500,000 in Doctors Across New York Funds to Support Physicians Practicing in Underserved Communities

Five health care providers in New York State have been awarded grants totaling up to $500,000 over two years to support physicians who practice medicine in underserved communities through the "Doctors Across New York" Program. The announcement was made by NYS Health Commissioner Commissioner Nirav R. Shah, M.D., M.P.H.

"The Doctors Across New York Program is a critical program to help ensure that New Yorkers in every community in the State have access to high quality health care services," Commissioner Shah said. "These grants will help these institutions increase access to vital health care services in rural and urban areas."
