Senator Parker with the Advocacy Academy a program sponsored by the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College

Senator Parker with participants and supporters of the Advocacy Academy, a program sponsored by the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College. Also pictured with the group is Senator Velmanette Montgomery.

Academy participants, who are comprised of faith and community based organization leaders, came to Albany as part of their 16 week-learning experience in advocating for their groups and the issues that are important to them. Among other things, the Advocacy Academy offered practical instruction on how to impact government policies through effective interaction with elected officials and governmental agencies.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO CONGRATULATES MERRICK RESIDENT ON APPOINTMENT TO STATEWIDE ADVISORY BOARD ON TOBACCO PREVENTION

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently congratulated Merrick resident Dr. Donald Teplitz on being appointed to the Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Advisory Board. Dr. Teplitz was appointed by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos at the recommendation of Senator Fuschillo.

     The Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Advisory Board advises the New York State Commissioner of Health on tobacco use prevention and control issues, including methods to prevent and reduce tobacco use in the state.

SENATOR GOLDEN ISSUES ALERT TO RESIDENTS REGARDING SUSPICIOUS ATTEMPTS TO COMMIT ACTS OF FRAUD IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today is alerting local residents to two scam attempts brought to his attention which sought to obtain personal information for the purposes of fraud.

 

One resident yesterday reported a phone call from someone claiming to work for the Kings County Clerk’s Office threatening that failure to provide personal information would result in the termination of their Social Security benefits. Personal information requested included a marriage license, and when the local resident refused to give information, the person left a telephone number to return the call which was affiliated with the County Clerk’s office.

Senator Catharine Young Cuts the Ribbon at the Grand Opening of the Limestone American Legion

     When it began, the American Legion consisted of a small group of weary World War I veterans. Now, it is one of the largest, most influential non-profit groups in the United States with over 2.4 million members and 14,000 posts worldwide.     On Saturday, April 14, Senator Cathy Young (R,C,I – Olean) cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Limestone American Legion Post, 941 N. Main Street, with Post Commander David Barger (right) and Vice Commander Jim Cochran, who worked hard to upgrade the Post.     Senator Young is an auxiliary member of the Hinsdale American Legion Post and works hard to address veterans’ needs.

Eyeglasses & Hearing Aid Drop Off- Merrick

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) and the Merrick Lions Club will be sponsoring an eyeglass & hearing aid donation program where residents can donate their old or unwanted eyeglasses and hearing aids.

     The program will be held on Saturday, May 19th from 9 am to 12 pm at the Merrick Train Station Parking lot located on the Northwest corner of Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Residents will be able to drive up, drop off their old eyeglasses and/or hearing aids, and drive away.

     All eyeglasses and hearing aids collected through the program will be used by the Lions Club to help improve the lives of needy children and adults who cannot afford glasses or hearing aids.

Watkins Glen High School selected as one of 5 finalists in nationwide shoe design contest -- Congratulations!

A few days ago, I was glad to help spread the word that art students from Watkins Glen High School were Northeast regional finalists in a nationwide “Custom Culture” shoe design contest sponsored by Vans.

Now I'm truly glad to be able to say that Watkins Glen has been chosen as one of the 5 national finalists and will now go on to compete for the $50,000 Grand Prize.  According to the Vans website: “"These five schools will be flown out to Los Angeles and on May 30th, the grand prize will be awarded to one lucky winner at the Long Beach Museum of Art."
