Gianaris To Hold Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony of Renovated Vernon Blvd Dog Run with Nolan and Van Bramer

Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Cathy Nolan and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally open the renovated Vernon Boulevard dog run on Thursday, October 6 at 11 am. The elected officials worked with Queens West Development Corporation, New York State Department of Parks and DOG LIC, a local advocacy group, to secure funding for the much-needed renovations. The press conference will be held at the dog run on Vernon Boulevard at 48th Avenue.

Peace Rally in Morris Heights

Senator Serrano joined the Morris Heights Community for a Prayer Vigil and Peace Rally organized by Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson.  The event, themed "Community in Crisis", took place in the Sedgwick Avenue Playground in the Bronx, and was structured as a forum to speak out against the high volume of gun related violence that has recently plagued the community. "The recent shootings are a strong indication that all of us- parents, teachers, community residents, and elected officials- must work together to educate our youth", said Senator Serrano. "The youth are an integral part of our future and we must provide them with positive outlets where they can focus their attention, and safe alternatives to the streets."

Shed the Meds/Cell Phones for Soldiers

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that he will be sponsoring two programs on Saturday, October 29th where residents can safely dispose of expired and unwanted medication or old cell phones.

Senator Fuschillo’s “Shed the Meds” and “Cell Phones for Soldiers” programs will be held at the Bellmore Train Station’s far west parking lot, located on the northwest corner of Sunrise Highway and Centre Avenue, between 9 am and 12 pm on Saturday, October 29th.

Participating in both programs is easy; residents can drive up, drop off their unwanted medications and/or old cell phones, and drive away.

Senator Martins, Assemblywoman Schimel and Legislator Bosworth Promote Run/Walk For Autism

Senator Jack M. Martins, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and Nassau County Legislator Judi Bosworth joined together with Robin Schneider of the Eden Genesis Program to promote the upcoming 4th Annual Blazing Trails 4-Autism Four-Mile Run/Walk.

The run/walk will take place on Sunday, October 23 at 9:30 a.m. with the start and finish at Great Neck South High School, located at 341 Lakeville Road in Great Neck. Proceeds will go to the Eden II and Genesis Foundation, which supports children and adults with autism through specialized programs designed to help them achieve the highest possible quality of living throughout their lives.

Shirley, NY – State Senator Lee M. Zeldin (R, C, I- Shirley) participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this past Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Dowling College’s Brookhaven Campus in Shirley. Senator Zeldin (above center) is pictured here with his team of 25 walkers from the local community who were able to raise over $3,000 for this worthy cause.

Community Leaders Meet to Discuss Stop & Frisk and other Law Enforcement Policies

On Thursday, September 29, New York City leaders held a strategy meeting at DC 37 headquarters to begin to tackle some of the pervasive problems that face communities of color, such as the NYPD's current Stop & Frisk policy and other law enforcement issues. The meeting was co-convened by the National Action Network; the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, Chair Assemblyman Karim Camara; Make the Road; and the New York Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn) and Kirsten John Foy.  This meeting was part of the larger response from Council Member Williams and Min.
