NY Youth Works Program Provides $62 Million for Job Training and $25 Million in Tax Credits to Combat High Unemployment among Inner City Youth

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the launch of "NY Youth Works," a statewide program to combat the unacceptably high unemployment rates among inner city youth in communities across New York. The new program, passed last month in an extraordinary session of the state legislature, includes $25 million in tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed and disadvantaged youth and $62 million to support job training programs.

Senator Fuschillo Delivers Over 2,000 Toys to Winthrop Hospital

Senator Fuschillo visits Winthrop Hospital's Pediatric Unit to deliver over the over 2,000 toys that were collected through his annual "Extend the Holidays" toy drive. The toys were delivered after the new year so that children could continue to experience the joy of receiving gifts throughout the new year.

Toys were collected with the help of local schools, labor unions, families, and businesses.

OLD MILL ROAD KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS WELCOME SENATOR FUSCHILLO TO THEIR CLASS

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently visited Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick to serve as a guest reader to Mrs. Morash’s kindergarten class.

Senator Fuschillo read “House Mouse, Senate Mouse” by Peter and Cheryl Barnes to the students. The story allowed the children to learn in a fun way what Senator Fuschillo’s job is and how laws are made.

“I really enjoyed my visit to Old Mill Road. It was wonderful to see how involved the students got into the story and how excited they got about reading. I thank them for allowing me to visit their class,” said Senator Fuschillo.

Jennifer Melfi, 13 Year Old Amateur Radio Operator, Received Senate Citation

Senator Owen H. Johnson honored 13 year old amateur radio operator Jennifer Melfi with a Senate Citation for assisting Babylon Town’s emergency operations efforts during Tropical Storm Irene.  Jennifer Melfi received the citation in front of 150 ham radio operators at the Amateur Radio Convention at Briarcliffe College in Bethpage on January 8, 2012.  “Jennifer Melfi has performed a valuable service to our community and demonstrates that her young age did not prevent her from lending tremendous help during a disaster,” Senator Johnson said.  “I am honored to congratulate this outstanding young lady for her exemplary community service with the Town of Babylon Emergency Operations Center.”

SENATOR GOLDEN ANNOUNCES METROCARD VAN SCHEDULES FEBRUARY VISIT

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, 22nd District) is today announcing that the Metropolitan Transit Authority has scheduled the Metro Card Van to visit his Bay Ridge District Office, located at 7408-5th Avenue, on Monday, February 6, 2012 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Metro Card Bus will enable the local residents to take care of all their Metro Card business at the Metro Card Bus, whether it's applying for or refilling a Reduced-Fare Metro Card, buying or refilling a regular Metro Card, or asking a MetroCard-related question. Senator Golden assures residents that they will receive prompt and attentive service.

Early this morning, Hammondsport and Beaufort, North Carolina had each gathered 34.9% of the vote.

SENATOR ANDREW LANZA VOTES TO TOUGHEN LAWS FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

The New York State Senate passed legislation this week that creates new penalties for individuals supervising another driver while also under the influence of drugs or alcohol, also known as Abbagail’s Law (S.164C).   The bill, cosponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, is named after eight-year-old Abbagail Buzard, who died in a car accident caused by an inexperienced driver who was supervised by a parent under the influence of alcohol.
