Editor's note: It was in the month of June 1863 that most people in the United States first heard of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Earlier this month, on June 17, state Sen. Diane Savino celebrated the document's historic significance with a first-time event called Juneteenth. Maurice Ray of Stapleton submitted a winning essay about what emancipation means to him. IN THE NEWS: Staten Island Advance - Bill to restore yellow bus service passes state Senate

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A bill to amend the state education law to mandate that the city Department of Education provide yellow school bus transportation to children in grades three through eight who live more than one mile from school passed the state Senate in the waning days of the Legislature last week. But it awaits action in the Assembly Education Committee, which could come if state lawmakers reconvene in a special session, possibly later in the summer. The Bloomberg administration yanked yellow bus service for seventh- and eighth-graders at the start of the school year last fall to save an estimated $2.1 million annually. Senator Ruben Diaz Says Christians Need to Organize Better Against Gay Marriage

NEW YORK - Bronx state Senator Ruben Diaz, the lone Democrat to vote against landmark the gay marriage bill in New York, reflected on the defeat Monday, saying Christians need to organize better against gay marriage and support candidates who share their values.

Diaz, one of the 29 senators who voted "no" on the gay marriage legislation, is known as one of the most vocal opponents against the bill. He held a massive rally against the bill weeks before it was introduced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the state Legislature. When the bill was introduced for a vote Friday, he was also the only senator to speak against the bill on the floor.
