Parents from P.S. 234 angry over unusable school gym

The Queens Courier wrote an article about the delay in reopening P.S. 234’s school gym, which has many parents concerned. Senator Gianaris believes the handling of the situation is unacceptable.

Parents from P.S. 234 are exercising their voices in disapproval of the delay in reopening the school’s flood-ravaged gymnasium.The elementary school, located at 30-15 29th Street in Astoria, has been without a gym since September due to damage caused by severe rain storms. The flooding produced “bumps” in the gym floor and has prevented the facility from being used thus far this semester, prompting many parents to wonder whether their children are receiving the proper physical education.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO RECEIVES AUTISM ADVOCACY AWARD FROM AUTISM SPEAKS

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) was recently honored by Autism Speaks for his tireless advocacy for individuals with autism.

Senator Fuschillo received Autism Speaks’ Autism Advocacy Award for authoring New York State’s autism insurance reform law. The law will enable individuals with autism spectrum disorders to receive insurance coverage for screening, diagnosis and treatment. The law will save families with autism tens of thousands of dollars a year in out of pocket costs for autism treatment and therapies which many insurance companies refuse to cover. The law takes effect on November 1st.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled his 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan, which expands on the historic reforms enacted last year to continue building a New New York. As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks.
