STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

New Yorkers are ready to move past Election Day.  They want us to govern and focus on their priorities.  According to a Siena College poll, the top priorities of New Yorkers are creating jobs, reducing state spending and taxes, and balancing the budget.  Senate Republicans are ready to get to work and get results on these issues.

This year Senate Republicans proposed a job creation plan that would provide a tax credit, which is similar to one enacted by the federal government, that would create thousands of jobs at no cost to the State, and help get people off unemployment.

Senator Ruben Diaz's Auburn Citizen Letter to the Editor

November 15, 2010

Ms. Jean Bennett

Auburn Citizen

25 Dill Street

Auburn, New York 13021

To The Editor:

Thank you for your editorial in which you support my legislation (S.3149-Diaz/A.4704-Ball) to ban legislators’ outside income (Our View: Outlawing state legislators outside income a good idea).  In response to your statement that “we haven’t found much for which to praise state Sen. Ruben Diaz, Sr.,” I would like to offer the following comments.

If your only concerns are gay marriage and abortion, then your statement bears some merit.  I oppose gay marriage and I oppose abortion, and I always will.

It's last call for caffeinated alcoholic drink Four Loko on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island fans of caffeinated alcoholic drink Four Loko will soon need to take a road trip to catch their favorite buzz.

The maker of potent Four Loko agreed voluntarily yesterday to stop shipping the drink to New York state by Friday.

Earlier in the weekend, the largest New York distributors said they would cease deliveries of the drink to markets throughout the state; they will have until Dec. 10 to clear inventory.

Four Loko has been on the radar of the State Liquor Authority, which had begun to question its safety and target audience.

"There is simply not enough research to show that these products are safe," said SLA Chairman Dennis Rosen, in a statement.

Celebrating Victories and Engaging in Civil Disobedience for New York’s Disadvantaged

On November 11, at Voices of Community Advocates and Leaders New York’s (VOCAL NY) 10th Anniversary Gala, I was honored to receive the inaugural Bob Kohler Award in recognition of my work on behalf of people who are living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, homelessness or incarceration.  This award was especially meaningful not only because of my close partnership with VOCAL NY in securing significant legislative victories but also because the award was named for my friend the late Bob Kohler, who was a legendary progressive activist and champion for New York's least advantaged.  I was also pleased to share the recognition with the organization's other honorees, U.S.
