A Message From Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos

To All New Yorkers,

Welcome to the official web site of the New York State Senate. The new year of 2011 brings important changes and challenges to our State government, and to the State of New York as a whole.

The members of  the State Senate will be working closely with our new Governor Andrew Cuomo and the members of the New York State Assembly to meet the significant challenges that lie ahead.

The people’s priorities must be our priorities.  That means balancing the state budget, closing the deficit, easing the burden on taxpayers, and doing everything we can to strengthen our economy and create private sector jobs.

Martin Luther King, Jr. 2011 Greetings

On January 17, 2011, we celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.  I extend warm greetings to my African-American brothers and sisters and all people of good will who follow Dr. King's example.

It has been over forty years since Dr. King was taken from us, so quickly and so violently. Yet, the manner in which he left us is not what I wish to dwell on today. Rather, I believe it is important to reflect on the lessons he left us, the lessons of his life and the lessons of his legacy.

B'klyn moves to clean up pollution from Cruise Ship Terminal at Pier 12

Picture 12,000 cars idling on a block — and you’ll have some idea what it’s like near the Brooklyn waterfront when a single cruise ship is in port, experts say.

So local lawmakers and activist gathered today in Red Hook to call on the city, state and Carnival Cruise lines to finally cut a deal to bring clear-air "shore power technology" to the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal on Pier 12.

"It’s time to stop choking Brooklyn," said state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-Brooklyn).

"Cruise ships idling at port force Brooklynites to breathe in dirty, dangerous diesel fumes. Putting an end to it is long overdue."

Cruise ships docked at Red Hook terminal are 'choking Brooklyn,' community leaders say

BY Erin Durkin

Cruise ships docked in Brooklyn are spewing tons of noxious fumes into the air, and a fix is bogged down in two years of bureaucratic nonsense, officials and community leaders complained Monday.

"We can smell that diesel wafting over the neighborhood," state Sen. Daniel Squadron (D-Brooklyn) said. "It's time for the cruise ship terminal to stop choking Brooklyn."

Cruise ships that dock at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook have to run on diesel because there's no way for them to plug into the electric grid.
