Some Final Thoughts

It has been an enormous privilege over the past six years that I’ve represented this region in the New York State Senate to have the opportunity, through this website, to now and then express a few thoughts, share a few opinions, and offer my own perspective on so many of the key issues of the day.

But as many of you know, I’m winding down 32 years as a New York State legislator.  I’ll be retiring at the end of this week.  So this will be my final web column.  For those of you who have faithfully read these words, and then perhaps seen fit to send me a few thoughts of your own (which, by the way, many of you have), I simply want to say thank you.

SENATOR NOZZOLIO: THE GOSSETT CENTER SHOULD STAY AND COMMISSIONER CARRION NEEDS TO RESIGN

New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio today voiced opposition and raised serious concerns with proposed plans to dismantle the State juvenile justice system by allowing localities to operate their own juvenile justice services. It has been proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others that the Office of Children and Family Services transfer the juvenile justice system to local community-based programs. This proposal would include the closure of the Louis Gossett Jr. Center in Lansing.

“As a nation, we have the moral responsibility to care for the brave 9/11 rescue workers who so tirelessly participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero and as a result have suffered illness or injury.  “I am pleased that Congress was able to work together to pass this vital legislation to provide much needed funding for medical treatment for these brave men and women. “I applaud Presided Obama and our Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kristin Gillibrand, and Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler, for their commitment to the passage of this critical bill."

OUR TOWN: Seniors Voice Concerns on SBS and Bike Lanes

The Spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the 4th Senate District!

Senator Owen H. Johnson presented over one hundred toys this Christmas for the children of members of the Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment.  Senator Johnson presented the gifts to Sergeant Colin Stewart, a member of the 69th Regiment and Beth DelliPizzi, wife of Lieutenant Louis DelliPizzi, who has donated her time to circulate the gifts to families in need this holiday season.

“I’d like to thank all of those who so generously donated toys for the boys and girls of the soldiers assigned to the Fighting 69th,” Senator Johnson said.   “The wonderful response has been a reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well in my Senate District.”

State Senator Marty Golden and Assemblywoman-Elect Malliotakis Celebrate the Holidays with Lutheran Medical Center

State Senator Marty Golden (R, C, I - Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman-elect Nicole Malliotakis (R, C - Staten Island/Bay Ridge) today celebrated the holiday season with children from Lutheran Medical Center's Magical Years Early Childhood Center. The two legislators donated bins full of toys from their holiday toy drive. The toys were donated by members of the Bay Ridge Center for Older Adults and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church.

"I was overwhelmed by the amount of toys donated. The bins were literally overflowing with gifts," said Malliotakis. "This is yet another example of the generosity that makes me so proud to be a part of this community. I am pleased to work with Senator Golden and our community organizations to make this is a special holiday for Brooklyn's children."

Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. has Open House in West Islip.

Senator Owen H. Johnson stopped in at the Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. (YES) first Open House at the West Islip Community Center on November 18, 2010 to meet with Executive Director MaryAnn Pfeiffer and youth participants.  YES works closely with the schools and other community organizations to provide programs that foster volunteerism, work readiness, tutoring, mentoring and other after school activities for youth and their families.

SENATOR MARTY GOLDEN SECURES TRAFFIC LIGHT BY FONTBONNE HALL ACADEMY

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, 22nd District) today is announcing that the New York City Department of Transportation has approved his request to install a traffic light at a busy intersection at the corner of the block of Fontbonne Hall Academy.

The Department of Transportation has approved a traffic signal to be installed at the intersection of 99th Street and Shore Road by March 31, 2011.

Senator Marty Golden stated, “This corner has long been one where a traffic light has been requested by the parents, administration and students of Fontbonne Hall Academy.
