Senator Montgomery honored Dr. Frances Fox Piven upon the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the publication of Regulating the Poor: The Functions of Public Welfare, a book she wrote about social policy in the United States. The Senator is joined by Senators Gustavo Rivera and Bill Perkins.

All State musicians visit Albany

Participants in the recent New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) event in Albany include two members of the All State Jazz Ensemble from the 62nd Senate District: Michal Craig from Gates Chili High School (drum set) and Paul Rappolt from Starpoint Junior Senior High School (alto saxophone).  Also, Daniel Montgomery of Gates Chili High School sang with the All State Vocal Jazz Ensemble as a tenor.

SENATOR RITCHIE: NEW LAW TO HELP MILITARY VOTE

Provides Adequate Time In Special ElectionsState Sen. Patty Ritchie says a bill she co-sponsored that Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law today will help soldiers who are risking their lives have the opportunity to vote in special elections. "I am very pleased to see New York State helping to make sure that our military personnel who are defending our way of life will have an opportunity to participate in their special local elections," she said. The law changes the current system in which special elections were held between 30 to 40 days after they were called by the governor.  The new law increases the time to 70 to 80 days, giving local boards of election time to send ballots to military personnel overseas.

 March 10, 2011 “The dangers faced by the people of the Catskills in relation to flooding these past few and next several days are avoidable to a degree.  The Senate has previously passed my legislation to require New York City to reduce reservoir levels whenever major inflows of rain or snow were anticipated.  Shortly thereafter, New York City started to take some flood mitigation measures.”

Senator Breslin Recognizes World Kidney Day

Kidney diseases are silent killers, many patients do not show any symptoms until they reach kidney failure. Senator Breslin encourages all of his constituents to get tested and spread the word about the importance of getting tested for kidney disease. This year, World Kidney Day focuses on Diabetes. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney diseases worldwide.  Major causes of kidney damage include hypertension, obesity, and pollution. Many people ignore the severity of these conditions which has led to an increase in the prevalence of kidney disorders.
