STATEMENT BY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I applaud Governor Cuomo for keeping his commitments to reduce spending and to not raise taxes.  The state simply cannot continue to put off the spending reductions that are necessary to close the deficit.  All levels of government need to understand that they have to do more with less.

By making the tough decisions now, we can reform the way government operates and make New York a place where businesses want to stay, grow and create new private sector jobs.  While there are still more budget details yet to come related to school aid, Medicaid reforms, government consolidation and changes to our corrections system, I hope everyone involved can work together in an open, public process and get a budget done on time.

Statement from Senator Lee M. Zeldin RE: Governor Cuomo’s Budget Proposal

“I will be analyzing Governor Cuomo’s Budget Proposal very thoroughly in the coming days and weeks.  I will continue to work hard for a balanced budget that does not include any tax increases. For the past two years, Long Islanders and Third Senate District taxpayers have been shortchanged by Albany politicians.  I will work hard to make sure that our district's interests and region's interests are not ignored. We're all in this together

As you read this news column, local officials, state lawmakers and community leaders are already involved in analyzing Gov. Cuomo’s budget proposals. The Governor and the Legislature must act to balance the state’s precarious finances with the ongoing need for vital government services, all the while recognizing that New Yorkers are already among the highest taxed in the nation, and simply can’t afford to pay more. I haven’t waited for the Governor’s budget to begin the process of gauging how the budget may impact our local communities in Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.

High property taxes are forcing people and jobs out of our state.  We must create a better climate for economic growth, and having more control over property taxes is critical to that goal.  More than eight in ten New Yorkers agree that the property tax cap is a step in the right direction.  That is an overwhelming majority, and we owe it to them to act.
