Senator Serrano Stands up for Car Wash Workers' Rights in the South Bronx

Senator Serrano participated in a press conference in support of the worker's rights of more than a dozen Sunny Day Car Wash workers in the South Bronx. The workers organized a strike after two weeks of being unpaid. After being fired for non-compliance, the former employees formed a picket line to protest non-payment of wages and mistreatment.  

"Far too often, workers in our community are exploited or treated unfairly at the workplace," said Senator Serrano. "Many of these hard working people are new immigrants seeking to put food on their table and achieve the American Dream. I believe it's important for elected officials to stand up for the rights and dignity of these workers. "

Senator Farley Salutes Living Resources

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) was on hand at the ribbon cutting ceremony, held October 31st, officially recognizing Living Resources as a full service certified home care agency for 10 counties. Pictured with Dr. Fred Elrich, Senator Farley was also pleased to celebrate the organization's 25 years of assisting people with developmental disabilities in the Capital Region.

Senator Farley Salutes Schenectady Physicians

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) recently had the pleasure of presenting the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Dr. Clifford Tepper and Dr. Arnold Ritterband, co-medical directors of the Schenectady Free Clinic. Both are retiring after dedicating numerous years of free medical knowledge to uninsured residents of Schenectady.

In 2002, Drs. Ritterband and Tepper were advocates of Senator Farley's legislation that authorized the creation of the volunteer-based organization. In 2006, another Farley-sponsored measure made the Schenectady County pilot program permanent, and in 2008 Senator Farley sponsored the law which expanded the program Statewide.

Senator Serrano joins the Roosevelt Island community for their Annual Halloween Day Parade

Senator Serrano and his family joined the Roosevelt Island community for their annual Halloween Day Parade. The parade, organized by Urban American, the R.I. Youth Center and RIOC, included free Halloween festivities such as game booths, mechanical rides, balloon typhoon, spin art, cotton candy, popcorn, music, and more. Council Member Jessica Lappin also attended the parade with her family.“This parade is a wonderful opportunity to get together with family and the Roosevelt Island community to celebrate Halloween,” said Senator Serrano. “The Roosevelt Island community does a great job in organizing an event that is fit for the entire family. I enjoy seeing the wonderful costumes and great activities the community has to offer each year.”

Senator Farley Offers Halloween Safety Tips

As the Halloween festivities begin, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) reminds families to be safe when trick-or-treating.

"Halloween is a fun time of year for the youngsters as they get to dress up as their favorite characters and collect candy," Senator Farley said. "But it can also be needlessly dangerous if precautions aren't taken."

Senator Farley Offers Safety Tips as Part of Fire Prevention Month

October is National Fire Prevention Month and as part of that commemoration, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) offers safety tips.

"Protecting our loved ones is the responsibility of every parent, neighbor and citizen," Senator Farley said. "That's why it is important to stay informed on fire safety and to take steps to protect yourself and your families."

Senator Farley said it is important that everyone in your family knows to call 911 from a safe location to report a fire or other emergency. Have your children practice what they would say on the phone in case of a real emergency.

Serrano Statement Re: Governor Cuomo's Executive Order Requiring Language Assistance Services

Today Senator José  M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) praised Governor Andrew Cuomo's announcement that 27 state agencies are now in compliance with an Executive Order which required agencies to provide free language interpretation in six major non-English languages. Executive Order No. 26 issued in 2011 by Governor Cuomo, required state agencies that have direct interaction with the public, to provide official documents, forms, instructions, and translation services in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Italian, Korean and Haitian Creole.

Senator Farley Advises Constituents to Check With Comptroller's Unclaimed Funds Website

New York State currently has over $12 billion in unclaimed funds, said State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady).

Banks, insurance companies, utilities and many other businesses with funds that have been dormant or forgotten must turn those funds over to the State Comptroller's Office, which acts as a custodian until the funds are returned to their rightful owner, reported Senator Farley.

Types of unclaimed funds include savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits and mortgage insurance refunds.

INFORMATION ON NEW LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS

Because of the redistricting that happens every ten years, Congressional and state legislative districts are changing this year.

For example, the 44th Senate District will be renumbered as the 49th District. The boundaries of this district have changed as well. The current district consists of Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady and part of Saratoga counties. The new district will consist of Fulton and Hamilton counties, and part of Schenectady, Saratoga and Herkimer counties.
