It Stinks, by Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz

For Immediate ReleaseDecember 12, 2010It Stinksby Senator Reverend Ruben DiazKudos to Ms. Joanna Molloy from the New York Daily News for her sharp warning to us in Saturday’s column, New Yorkers rip Bloomberg on crash tax, say he's 'bleeding the middle class' dry.Her comparison of Mayor Bloomberg’s intention to allow the FDNY to bill drivers involved in accidents to the Emperor Nero’s tax on urine collectors may sound grotesque. According to history, Nero’s son complained about the gross nature of that tax. A gold coin was held high before him and a voice of authority stated: “This doesn’t stink.”

NYS Senator Eric Adams And Other Electeds Hold a Press Conference to Decry FDNY "Crash Tax" on Auto Accidents

On Saturday, December 11th, NYS Senator Eric Adams was joined by Council Member Jumaane D. Williams and Assembly Member Hakeem Jeffries to protest the FDNY “crash tax” (“accident tax”) on individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents

NYS Senator Eric Adams stated: “The FDNY proposes to add insult to injury; it has announced its intention to impose a fee on individuals involved in auto accidents. Under the plan, a car fire with personal injury will cost $490, a car fire without personal injury will cost $415, an accident with injury will cost $490, and an accident without injury will cost $365. This so-called ‘accident tax’ is unconscionable; if the FDNY responds, you will be charged, even when the accident is NOT your fault!

Helping those in need

Dear Friend:

As we share the joys of the season with friends and family, let’s not overlook those neighbors who are most in need.  Having served in the U.S. Marine Corps, I am reminded of those brave men and women in our Armed Forces who have spent the holidays away from their homes and families.  Many soldiers have returned home to Long Island and are suffering the hardships of this difficult economy.  They have my utmost respect and deserve our support and encouragement, especially during the holiday season.

Addabbo, Jr., whose district includes Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park, Howard Beach, Forest Hills, Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth and parts of other Queens areas all having commercial strips, now adds his strong objection to the upcoming increase in parking meter rates.  Starting January 3, 2011, a quarter will buy 15 minutes at a parking meter, rather than 20 minutes, the second time in less than two years that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has increased meter rates.  As recently as spring of 2009, a quarter bought 30 minutes at a parking meter.
