STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

Today, Senate Democrats finished voting on a budget that raises taxes by nearly $4 billion when fully implemented, including approval of new income taxes, business taxes and reinstatement of the sales tax on clothing.   It continues a disturbing trend that began when Democrats took control of the Senate last year and raised taxes by more than $10 billion, including elimination of the STAR rebate check and enactment of the MTA payroll tax.

Over the last two years, Democrats have raised taxes on the average New York family by $5500.

Statement of State Senator Daniel Squadron regarding the Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimous denial of landmark status for 45-47 Park Place

Today, the Landmarks Preservation Commission decision has affirmed values that define New York: we will not stand for intolerance, or let it stand in the way of building a diverse, vibrant city composed of people from all over the world. Our hallmark is our diversity, and I stand with the people of Lower Manhattan, the members of Community Board 1, and my colleagues in government to say that tolerance, diversity and mutual respect are as vital in the case of Cordoba House today as they have been in 400 years of New York history.

ADDABBO RETURNS HIS PER DIEM PAY

Queens, NY, August 3, 2010 – On the day he’s being called back to Albany for another rare summer legislative session to renew budget negotiations, NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., voiced his own frustration with the dysfunction in Albany. Addabbo is returning the per diem pay provided by NYS taxpayers for his travel and meal expenses for the recent session called for last week by Governor David Paterson that turned out to be anything but extraordinary or special.  The Governor called the legislators back on July 28 and July 29 for a "special session" to pass his budget proposals. Since the Governor’s budget bills were not sent to the Senate for a vote neither session day, no vote was ever taken by the Senate during their time in Albany last week.

STATEMENT BY SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I said last week, after the extraordinary session that was called by the Governor, that Senate Republicans were prepared to vote in favor of several bills but were never given the opportunity to do so.

We support the property tax cap bill, the Power for Jobs extension, the elimination of the State sales tax on low-sulfur heating fuel and the Governor’s proposed budget contingency plan dealing with federal FMAP assistance.  Those bills are before us again today and we should take them up without further delay.
