200 teens rally at City Hall against 35,000 job cut to Summer Youth Employment Program

With thousands of summer jobs in jeopardy, more than 200 city teens rallied in City Hall Park Thursday against funding cuts to the popular Summer Youth Employment Program.

Nachaell Gonzalez, 16, of the Bronx who has worked at a family center for the past three years, called the program critical for local youth.

"Without it kids would be on the street, standing on the corner, doing I don't know what instead of earning money," she said.

Greencycle Swap is offered every 2nd Saturday of each month, alternating between Greenpoint and Williamsburg locations.  For our April Greencycle Swap, we have partnered with the Greenpoint Reformed Church, located at 138 Milton Street (near Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint).   It’s a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle gently used & working clothes, shoes, toys, books, & cell phones!   We also take in computers (working and non-working), electronics (working only please), and now – with the help of Recycle-A-Bicycle, working bicycles too!

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) was a guest speaker at the Amsterdam Family YMCA's awards breakfast on March 25th. The event honored 20 senior students and six educators from the Amsterdam, Broadalbin-Perth, Galway and Fonda-Fultonville high schools. Among the honorees were Fonda-Fultonville senior Lauren Crandall, who received the Amsterdam Family YMCA 2010 Outstanding Senior Student Award; and Damian Ubriaco, of Galway High School, who received the 2010 Outstanding Educator Award.

Senator Serrano, Advocates, and U.S. Census Bureau Encourage All to Participate in the 2010 Census

Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today sponsored an event in conjunction with Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito (D-Manhattan/Bronx), Community Voices Heard, and the U.S. Census Bureau, that aimed to help achieve a complete and accurate count of the population in New York's 28th Senatorial District for the Census 2010.  "With only ten questions, the Census 2010 form is a simple five minute time investment that will help our communities obtain the benefits, services, and representation they deserve," said Senator Serrano. "It's important to note that Census information is never shared with immigration officials or any municipal, state, or federal agencies.

Senate Honors Greenburgh Woman

The state Senate yesterday passed a resolution h0noring Dr. Olivia Hooker, a Greenburgh resident and a psychologist and former college professor at Fordham University.

Born in 1915, Hooker was the first African-American woman to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and is a survivor of the Tulsa Riot of 1921, Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said in a news release.

The senator said she introduced the resolution to honor Hooker’s achievements and contributions to the women and civil rights movements...
