Free Fishing Weekend in NYS Slated

This weekend (June 28th-29th) New Yorkers may fish for free without a license in any of the state's 7,500 lakes and ponds or 50,000 miles of rivers and streams. In addition, there are a number of free events and fishing clinics taking place across the state to encourage New Yorkers to enjoy the great outdoors. SENATOR MARTINS HELPS OPEN WILLISTON PARK LIBRARY’S NEW CHILDREN’S ROOM

     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) helped officially rededicate the new children’s room at the Williston Park Public Library. Senator Martins secured state funding to enable the library to undertake the community improvement project.

SENATOR BALL AND ASSEMBLYMAN BUCHWALD ANNOUNCE PASSAGE OF POW/MIA FLAG BILL

Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I–Patterson) and Assemblyman David Buchwald (D–White Plains) have announced that the New York State Legislature has passed a bill that Buchwald authored and Ball championed that would require local governments to display the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag when it is provided to the municipality by a local veterans organization (S7483/A8489A). The legislation will now be sent to the desk of Governor Andrew Cuomo for approval.

GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNS LEGISLATION TO COMBAT HEROIN, OPIOID AND PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE EPIDEMIC

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed legislation designed to combat the growing heroin and opioid epidemic in communities across the State. Last week, the Governor and legislative leaders reached an agreement on multiple bills that include new programs and insurance reforms to improve treatment options for individuals suffering from heroin and opioid addiction; measures to strengthen penalties and put in place additional tools for law enforcement to crack down on the distribution of illegal drugs; provisions to ensure the proper and safe use of naloxone, an overdose antidote; and support for enhanced public awareness campaigns to prevent drug abuse.

20K RAISED FOR LOCAL DISABLED VETERAN AT SENATOR GREG BALL’S FAREWELL PARTY

Mahopac, NY – 06/25/2014 – On Tuesday evening Purple Heart Homes hosted a farewell pasta dinner for Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I –Patterson) at the Mahopac Firehouse. The event was open to the public and served as a fundraiser for Vietnam War Veteran Dan Flanagin’s home renovations.

Senator Ball announced last month that he will not be seeking reelection this fall. The farewell dinner was organized to benefit Private Daniel Flanigan, a 100% service-connected disabled Vietnam Veteran that was selected after a thorough vetting process by Purple Heart Homes, a non-profit based in Statesville, NC that provides housing solutions for disabled veterans.

Senator DeFrancisco Participates in Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Newly Renovated DeWitt Town Center

On June 24, 2014, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco helped celebrate finished renovations to the DeWitt Town Center, located at 3179 Erie Blvd. East.  The shopping and business center recently added six new tenants, including a new Time Warner Cable office.

Senator DeFrancisco Recognizes the 35th Anniversary of Hope for Bereaved

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco presented Hope for Bereaved Founder and Executive Director Therese Schoeneck with a proclamation to help commemorate the 35th anniversary of the organization.  Hope for Bereaved held an open house and garden dedication at its main center at 4500 Onondaga Boulevard on June 24, 2014.

Senator DeFrancisco Visits Students Who Helped the Wood Frog Bill Pass in the New York State Senate

On June 23, 2014, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco made a special visit to Irene Manna's fourth-grade class at State Street School in Skaneateles to recognize students for their outstanding efforts to try and make the wood frog New York's official state amphibian. Senator DeFrancisco introduced legislation to designate the wood frog as the state's official amphibian, after receiving many compelling essays from students in the class.  The New York State Senate passed the bill on June 10, 2014. 

Senator DeFrancisco was joined in the classroom by Assemblyman Gary Finch, the bill's Assembly sponsor. Both legislators answered questions about the legislative process.

Local public libraries awarded construction grants

Elmira, N.Y., June 25—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) recently announced that public libraries throughout their legislative districts have been awarded state library construction grants.he area legislators said that the grants are being awarded through New York’s Library Construction Grant Program.

SENATOR GOLDEN TO CITY RESIDENTS: YOUR TAXES ARE TOO DAMN HIGH

Albany, NY - State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I) today voted against renewing several taxes affecting New York City residents, including portions of the New York City Sales Tax, and the NYC Personal Income Tax. Despite approval by the New York State Legislature, Senator Golden’s “No” vote signifies his belief that New York City's taxing of middle class families is unsustainable.

SENATOR DIANE SAVINO ANNOUNCES PASSAGE OF THE COMPASSIONATE CARE ACT IN THE NEW YORK STATE SENATE

 

ALBANY, NY -- Today, Senator Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn), sponsor of the Compassionate Care Act (S.7923 / A.6357), joined with members of the New York State Senate in voting overwhelmingly to establish a safe and regulated medical marijuana program in New York State. The Senate vote comes one day after a three-way agreement was struck between Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders, making New York the 23rd state in the nation that now will operate such a program.

Tougher penalties and increased limitations to crack down on illegal purchases and sales

Senator Andrew Lanza today announced the passage of legislation to restrict the market for ivory articles and rhinoceros horns. The legislation prohibits transactions involving these materials with very limited exceptions and increases the criminal and civil penalties for individuals who violate this law.
