Wallenda monument dedicated in Niagara Falls

A number of government officials, contractors, friends, and family gathered on Goat Island in Niagara Falls State Park today to help Nik Wallenda unveil a new monument commemorating his June 2012 high wire walk across Niagara Falls.  The site of the monument is near the spot where Nik stepped off on his famous journey that captured the international media spotlight.

Albany Times Union Agrees with Sen. Krueger on ATV Bill

The editorial board of the Albany Times Union agreed with Sen. Krueger and recommended that legislation to increase the allowable size of recreational ATVs to 1,500 pounds be put on hold. The editorial was reprinted in at least two other upstate papers, the Times Herald-Record (Hudson Valley) and the Recorder (Montgomery County).

Legislators oppose planned police building at Niagara River Gorge

State Sen. George Maziarz (R,C,I-Newfane) and Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,C,I-Lewiston) today sent a letter to the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation asking the agency to reconsider a plan to place a new, 7,000 square foot Parks Police Station on the Niagara River Gorge. Maziarz and Ceretto said that the station would detract from the natural beauty of the Niagara River Gorge and that there are alternative sights that the city of Niagara Falls has suggested to the Parks Department for the police station.

Niagara Falls State Park is looking better and better

Senator George Maziarz today joined the Cuomo administration in announcing the completion of Phase 1 of the restoration of Prospect Point, which is one of the most popular areas of Niagara Falls State Park. The ribbon cutting took place at the same time that ground was broken for Phase 2 of the restoration project.

SENATOR FUSCHILLO ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF NEW OCEAN PARKWAY SHARED-USE PATH

     Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has started construction on the new Ocean Parkway Coastal Greenway, a 3.6 mile shared-use path (SUP) between Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach. The $3.8 million project will provide vital links for bicyclists and pedestrians between the widely utilized Wantagh Shared Use Path, Jones Beach, and Tobay Beach.

Record-Setting Crowd to Sing the Classic Nursery Rhyme at Sally Marsh Hootenanny this Saturday

ALLEGANY STATE PARK – For the past 42 summers and counting, visitors have always been able to count on a Hootenanny with Sally Marsh at Allegany State Park every Thursday evening. Each summer, scores continue to come out to the park’s Quaker Amphitheater to sing and dance as Sally plays her songs.

Now, loyal fans and park visitors can be a part of history by helping Sally set a record, according to Senator Catharine Young.

On August 10, 2013, State Senator John A. DeFrancisco joined in on the festivities at Camillus Erie Canal Park to celebrate Towpath Day. Senator DeFrancisco is pictured speaking with Liz Beebe, an event organizer who participated in a historical exhibit at the Camillus Sim's Store Museum.  The event also featured a 5K Run/Walk, old fashioned crafts, wagon rides, boat tours, and food.  This year's event was titled, "In the Good Olde Summer Tyme," celebrating fun for all ages.

GOVERNOR SIGNS GALEF/CARLUCCI BILL BANNING SMOKING IN PLAYGROUNDS

Law prohibits smokers from exposing children to this harmful behavior 

(July 12, 2013) Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Senator David Carlucci are pleased to announce the Governor’s approval of legislation meant to protect our state’s youth.  The newly signed law (A.4205/S1643-Chapter 102 of the Laws of New York 2013) will prohibit smoking at public playgrounds where children under twelve are present during the hours between sunrise and sunset.  This legislation would not prevent local municipalities from enacting or applying more rigorous anti-smoking policies.

Carlucci, Galef Urge Governor Cuomo to Sign Comprehensive Boating Safety Package into Law

OSSINING, NYSenator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Westchester), Assemblywoman Sandy Galef(D-Westchester/Putnam), and other state and local officials today joined forces to urge the Governor to sign their legislation that will fundamentally change the way boating safety is implemented in New York State.  With summer finally here, the two state legislators were able to pass their bill through both chambers of the state legislature last week.  The effort is designed to educate individuals who currently do not possess boating knowledge to help prevent tragedies from unfolding, as was the case last summer in Long Island and along the Hudson River.

Just in time for summer, the long-awaited return of swimming at Stony Brook State Park!

 

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation today announced that the stream-fed swimming pool at Stony Brook State Park in Steuben County will reopen for the season on June 22. The pool has been closed since the end of the 2009 season due to water quality and clarity issues and budget constraints.
