Issues: State Parks

FROM THE DESK OF SENATOR JACK M. MARTINS

Disconnect to Reconnect

A few weeks ago, my wife gleefully announced our upcoming family vacation to New York’s Letchworth State Park and was met by deafening silence broken only by the sound of crickets. My four daughters and I stared blankly at each other and then simultaneously began our barrage of desperate interrogation. Where was Letchworth? Weren’t state parks just a day trip on some sort of larger itinerary? Why a house over a hotel? How could anyone spend an entire week in a remote cabin in a remote state park? With just each other! What would we do for fun? What would we eat? How would we survive? And the single most nerve-wracking aspect of the whole trip: Would there be a Wi-Fi connection?

Griffo calls for new notification system regarding low water levels at Hinckley Reservoir

UTICA -- Recently I have received numerous calls from constituents concerned about water levels at the Hinckley Reservoir. This prompted me to contact the Mohawk Valley Water Authority, which confirmed that water levels had indeed been dropping due to a faster-than-normal rate of outflow. I further determined that water was being released from the reservoir at about two to three times the normal rate, which led me to contact the New York State Canal Corporation to explain this significant increase in outflow.

RITCHIE CALLS FOR REOPENING OF SELKIRK SHORES SWIMMING BEACH

Senator Cites Need for Improving Services at Park, Drawing More Visitors to CNY Region

As summer begins, State Senator Patty Ritchie is calling on New York State to reopen the swimming beach at Oswego County’s Selkirk Shores State Park.

Due to budget cuts in 2010—before Senator Ritchie took office—the park’s swimming beach was closed, forcing visitors to travel 10 miles to Sandy Island, with no pedestrian trail linking the two parks.

“While Selkirk Shores boasts everything from hiking trails and camping sites to opportunities for fishing and boating, one of the things it no longer offers is a swimming beach,” said Senator Ritchie.

Chanukah is the celebration of Miracles!

"Chanukah is the celebration of miracles, a reminder that all things are possible," Senator Parker said.  "As you celebrate the spirit of Chanukah with friends and family, I wish you health, happiness and good fortune." The holiday celebrates a legendary victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jews, over a Greek army that occupied the Holy Land.  After the battle, the victorious Maccabees found only a one day supply of oil in the temple to light the lamps.  But the oil burned miraculously for eight days, the story says.
