LONG ISLAND SENATORS PRESS ASSEMBLY TO PASS PROPERTY TAX CAP

18,000 Taxpayers Sign Senate GOP Tax Cap Petition

Long Island’s Republican State Senators held a news conference today to pressure the State Assembly into acting on property tax cap legislation that passed the Senate earlier this year. More than 18,000 taxpayers have signed Senate Republicans’ PassTheTaxCap.Com petition urging the Assembly to join the Senate and pass the Governor’s property tax cap bill.

“Passing the Governor’s hard property tax cap bill was one of the first things the Senate did this year and, unfortunately, the bill has languished in the Assembly,” Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos said.

Gianaris: No tax help for Big Electric

This article in the Times Ledger was written just after tax abatement legislation that hurt ratepayers passed in the Senate on Monday. On Wednesday, however, legislation that helps prevent drastic rate hikes was passed by the Senate. I am happy my fellow Senators and I were able to stand up for ratepayers across the state.

State Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) condemned a bill passed in the Senate Monday to give tax abatements to power generators, saying it would provide them with an unfair tax benefit.

Senator Skelos' Statement on Governor Cuomo's Property Tax Cap Tour

Today, Governor Cuomo begins a statewide tour in support of his legislation to enact a hard property tax cap in New York.  The Governor is right - - soaring property taxes are driving middle-class families out of their homes and forcing businesses to flee the state.    That’s why the State Senate overwhelmingly passed the Governor’s property tax cap bill earlier this year, and why we’re working so hard to provide New Yorkers with meaningful relief.  If the Assembly leadership is serious about controlling property taxes, they will join us in passing the Governor’s bill.

Seniors and Others Helped in Claiming STAR Benefits

Legislation (S.3576) sponsored by Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson) and passed May 3 in the New York State Senate will help make it easier for property owners to claim STAR benefits if they missed the March 1 filing deadlines.

This is particularly important to senior citizens, who must remember to file for the enhanced STAR exemption each year. Missing the deadline, and therefore the exemption, could result in a homeowner facing an unexpected and significantly increased tax bill. LaValle’s bill instead authorizes municipalities to accept STAR applications after the locality’s taxable status date and before January 10 of the following year.

Schumer $hocking 'gougers'

The Post reported that following the announcement of Governor Cuomo's proposal regarding tax abatements for power companies, Senator Schumer has sent a letter to energy companies around the state asking "why the firms believe their tax breaks are in danger and how much of their windfall would go to stockholders. " I have also written similar legislation to the Governor's bill.
