Important news for homeowners: Maintaining your Basic STAR Exemption

Homeowners in New York State receiving a Basic STAR exemption must register with the N.Y.S. Department of Taxation and Finance by the end of the year, in order to continue receiving the exemption. Registration has already begun.  You can register online by visiting www.tax.ny.gov. Senior citizens who receive Enhanced STAR are NOT affected by the new registration requirement.

Basic STAR Registration Information

All homeowners currently receiving the Basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This is part of a new initiative to ensure that tax dollars are not wasted on inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.

Who must register?

Resident homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and future years.

Senator O'Brien reminds homeowners to reapply for STAR property tax exemption

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --  Senator Ted O’Brien today reminded New Yorkers who currently receive the basic STAR exemption they must reapply before December 31 to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and future years.

“The STAR exemption is one of the best tools we currently have to help protect New Yorkers from the crushing burden of property taxes,” Senator O’Brien said.  “The program was being strained by inappropriate and fraudulent uses, and this reapplication process will help ensure that this program is preserved for the hundreds of thousands who rely on it for tax relief.”

The exemption is for owner-occupied primary residences with a family income less than $500,000, and exempts the first $30,000 of the home’s value from school taxes.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Urges Homeowners To Re-Apply For STAR Exemption

Yonkers, NY - State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D/I/WF – 35th District) announced today that starting August 19th through the end of December, registration to receive the Basic STAR exemption will be open. New Registration Program for STAR Exemption

The 2013-14 State Budget requires all homeowners receivng the Basic STAR exemption to register with the Tax Department as part of an effort to eliminate inappropriate exemptions.

STAR registration will begin in August 2013. The Department will mail notices to all property owners currently receiving the STAR exemption, and implement a comprehensive outreach campaign to get the word out. Correspondence will be mailed September 16 through October 14.
