I have some very important news to share with homeowners in Western New York.  If you are a homeowner who receives a Basic STAR exemption for your school property taxes, you will need to register with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance to keep getting the STAR exemption in 2014 and beyond.  This is part of a new effort to eliminate fraud and protect property taxpayers.

New Registration Program for STAR Exemption

The 2013-14 State Budget requires all homeowners receivng the Basic STAR exemption to register with the Tax Department as part of an effort to eliminate inappropriate exemptions.

STAR registration will begin in August 2013. The Department will mail notices to all property owners currently receiving the STAR exemption, and implement a comprehensive outreach campaign to get the word out. Correspondence will be mailed September 16 through October 14. 

Attached is a fact sheet about the program. More information can be accessed at: www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star/index.htm. The registration program will allow homeowners to quickly and easily register for the Basic STAR exemption.

How to Keep Your STAR Property Tax Rebate

If you receive a STAR rebate check for your property taxes, please, please, read this column! It’s vital news to Long Island homeowners.

New legislation requires that ALL homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption re-apply with the New York State Tax Department in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and beyond. This is part of an enormous effort to root out fraud in the $1.9 billion system and it was enacted to protect honest New Yorkers against those who are falsely obtaining the exemption. In the end, they are stealing from you – the taxpayer.

FELDER: “DON’T LOSE YOUR TAX BREAK!”

Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) is reminding homeowners who currently receive a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. LaValle:New Legislation Requires One-Time Registration for BASIC STAR Exemption

New York State Senator Ken LaValle reminds residents that new legislation requires all homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years.

The 2013-14 State Budget fully funds the EPIC prescription drug program, helping 270,000 seniors with the high costs of their prescription drugs. The State Budget also delivers $912 million in property tax relief to senior homeowners as part of the Enhanced STAR program.

Senator Farley Clears Up Confusion on STAR

You may have heard that the new budget will require all current recipients of the basic STAR property tax exemption to re-register on a one-time basis in order to root out fraud in the system. The registration deadline is not until April of next year, and I will post information when the Tax Department announces the process for re-registering.
