SENATOR SQUADRON CITES JAY-Z, BILLY JOEL ON SENATE FLOOR TO BAN RESALE OF CHARITY TICKETS FOR PROFIT

Squadron Fights Annual Ticket Resale Extender Bill So Resellers Can't Profit from Charity Events

Squadron: "H to the izz-O, T to the icket... Of Ticket Scalping You Wouldn't Believe, How Many Charities Have Been Cheated, Funds Diverted Like Thieves"

ALBANY -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron cited Jay-Z and Billy Joel on the Senate floor in opposition to a bill that would let ticket resellers continue to make a profit on charity events. This annual bill extending ticket resale laws in New York (S.4801) passed the Senate. This follows Senator Squadron's floor speech in 2014 citing Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen opposing this legislation. Squadron has carried legislation for years (S.571) that would prohibit the practice of reselling tickets for more than their face value if the event’s revenue is dedicated to a charity or not-for-profit cause.

Here is the clip of Senator Squadron's speech today on the Senate Floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPbq8DT3XVA

BUDGET MUST REFLECT THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES FACING MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILIES

Statement from Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – Olean) following Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State Address and Executive Budget Proposal:

“We need to keep our eye on the ball, and the primary focus during budget negotiations should be jobs, jobs and more jobs. I was happy to hear the Governor speak about small business tax relief and expansion of broadband in rural areas because both of the initiatives will bring us more opportunities. Distribution of economic development funds must benefit rural areas to ensure that every region of the state gets the attention it needs and deserves. There shouldn’t be winners and losers when it comes to job growth.

"Chanukah is the celebration of miracles, a reminder that all things are possible," Senator Parker said.  "As you celebrate the spirit of Chanukah with friends and family, I wish you health, happiness and good fortune." The holiday celebrates a legendary victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jews, over a Greek army that occupied the Holy Land.  After the battle, the victorious Maccabees found only a one day supply of oil in the temple to light the lamps.  But the oil burned miraculously for eight days, the story says.

Times Union: Open Internet access imperative

By Martin Malave Dilan, CommentaryThe Federal Communications Commission is struggling to reach an agreement on if, and how much your Internet access provider can limit your access to online content and what content it can limit. In a nutshell, that's the Net Neutrality debate. And the FCC has opened that debate as it weighs the merger America's top two broadband Internet service providers.I proffer the following: There is no acceptable business model for the control over access to information; and there is no acceptable policy with regards to who deems, or what they deem, as "commercially acceptable" or "preferential" regarding information and access to it.
