    The New York State Senate gave final legislative passage to a bill (S.5253B) to divert youth to an education program addressing the sending of nude or obscene photographs through electronic technologies, also known as “sexting,” as well as conduct that constitutes “cyberbullying.”     The bill, entitled the “Cyber-Crime Youth Rescue Act,” sponsored by Senator Kemp Hannon (R-C-I, Garden City), requires the development of an educational program about the numerous perils of sexting and cyberbullying. The program provides an option other than a permanent criminal record for juveniles deemed eligible by a court.

Senator Klein Kicks Off Summer Safety Program

Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, (D-Bronx/ Westchester), announced the kickoff of the “Stay Safe with Senator Klein” program, a joint initiative with NY Life aimed at helping children stay safe, and alerting residents to potentially dangerous sex offenders in their neighborhood.

During the program, Senator Klein and staff members, using Internet-equipped laptops, will be visiting summer festivals and street fairs throughout the 34th Senate District in order to sign people up for New York's Sex Offender Alert System. NY Life will also be on hand to issue child identification cards.

Griffo Says Broadband Cuts Hurt Upstate Jobs

(Albany) - State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo (R-IP-C, Rome) today reacted with alarm to Albany’s plan to renege on a commitment for matching funds for sorely needed high-speed Internet access to North Country homes and businesses.

Senate and Assembly Democrats stripped $100 million in funding from the state budget for broadband matching grants, including at least $2 million that, together with federal stimulus funding, was planned for projects in rural St. Lawrence County, according to a story in today’s Journal News.

“Democrats called their plan a ‘roadmap,’ but cutting funds for programs that are tied to job growth and economic revitalization can only lead to a dead end for North Country jobs and businesses,” Griffo said.
